Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Konrad Laimer, and they will face competition from Premier League rivals Chelsea.

According to German journalist Christian Falk, Liverpool have already been in contact with Konrad Laimer’s management. And it remains to be seen whether they can come forward with a concrete offer for the the 25-year-old ahead of the January transfer window. The RB Leipzig midfielder is also a target for Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

Laimer will be a free agent in the summer, and RB Leipzig are likely to be tempted to sell him permanently during the winter transfer window. The Austrian international has been a key figure for RB Leipzig over the last few years, and they will not want to lose a player of his calibre on a free transfer.

It makes sense for them to cash in on the midfielder for a nominal price in January and invest the proceeds from the sale into their squad. It is no surprise that Liverpool are keen on signing the versatile midfielder in the coming months after chasing him in the summer.

Jurgen Klopp desperately needs central midfield reinforcements, and Laimer can operate in a number of roles. The Austrian international can play as a central midfielder as well as a defensive midfielder. And he would be an upgrade on Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, who has not been at his best for a while now.

Furthermore, the 25-year-old can compete with Brazilian international Fabinho for the starting berth. The former AS Monaco midfielder has not been at his best this season, and he could do with some competition for places.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have been without star midfielder N’Golo Kante for a considerable period over the last few months because of persistent injury problems. And they could use more quality and depth in that position as well.

Laimer has certainly proven himself in Bundesliga, and he would be a quality acquisition for both Chelsea and Liverpool, especially on a free transfer. He scored five goals and picked up six assists across all competitions last season.

Christian Falk adds that German champions Bayern Munich are keen on securing the midfielder’s services and are leading the chase. It remains to be seen whether the Austrian international is keen on continuing in the Bundesliga next season. In that case, Bayern Munich would definitely have an edge in the transfer chase.

As for Liverpool and Chelsea, both clubs are equally matched in terms of squad quality and ambitions. It will be interesting to see where Laimer ends up if he decides to move to the Premier League.
