Chelsea are keeping tabs on AS Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini amid uncertainty surrounding Mason Mount’s future.

According to Daily Telegraph, Premier League giants Chelsea are interested in AS Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini ahead of the 2023 transfer windows.

The Blues are in the midst of an overhaul under Todd Boehly. Several players have been moved on as a new era dawns. And one player who the Londoners are keen to keep on is academy graduate Mason Mount.

The Englishman has established himself as a first-teamer over the last two years and is among the best young midfielders in the Premier League. A dynamic presence in the middle of the park, Mount has a bright future ahead of him.

Mount has just 20 months left on his current deal at Stamford Bridge. As things stand, he is yet to reach an agreement with Chelsea regarding a new deal. So the Blues, for their part, are preparing for any eventuality and have identified targets should Mount move on.

Pellegrini, at 26, is an experienced player and plays in a similar role to Mount and could be a like-for-like replacement for the Englishman. However, the Italian international has a long-term deal at Stadio Olimpico and will not come cheap.

A good dribbler and finisher, Pellegrini would be an excellent asset for Chelsea. His prowess on the dead ball is another trait that he can add to the Blues’ roster. The 26-year-old possesses an eye for a pass and is capable of prising open opposition defences at will. On paper, he would be an excellent acquisition for Chelsea.

Graham Potter appears to have a strong impression of Mount and has played him in all four games under his tenure. Mount impressed against Wolverhampton Wanderers, providing two assists in the 3-0 win. If it was an opportunity for him to show Chelsea what he is about, the 23-year-old certainly scored a home run.

Mount might be inconsistent, but he is a solid player with a high ceiling. So while Pellegrini’s experience works in his favour for now, the Englishman could overtake him in the next few years. Chelsea will resume negotiations with Mount in the next few months. It will be interesting to see how negotiations progress.
