Real Sociedad will reportedly look to sign Barcelona’s top scorer from the 2021/22 season, Memphis Depay, in a late move this summer.
According to a report by Spanish outlet El Desmarque, Memphis Depay is the subject of interest from Real Sociedad over a possible late move in the ongoing transfer window. Barcelona’s top scorer from the 2021/22 season faces an uncertain future at Camp Nou, with the Blaugrana keen on offloading him.
Memphis Depay joined Barcelona from Lyon last summer in a Bosman move after running down his contract at the Groupama Stadium. And the Dutch attacker started his stint with the Catalan club superbly, almost singlehandedly earning his team crucial points in several games in the first half of the 2021/22 season.
But Depay’s stock at Camp Nou has fallen since the turn of the year, with Barcelona making four attacking reinforcements in the last two transfer windows. So Depay has fallen to the bottom of the pecking order, even though he ended 2021/22 as Barcelona’s top scorer. And with the Blaugrana keen on offloading him before the summer ends, Real Sociedad might look to sign him.
Real Sociedad will look to bolster the offensive unit before the summer transfer window shuts down after losing Alexander Isak to Newcastle United. La Real’s early season form has been decent, but they have only found the back of the net thrice in as many games and could use an infusion of goals.
Depay, who had been prolific for Lyon and finished his debut season with Barcelona as their top scorer, has thus emerged as a viable target for Real Sociedad. So La Real might approach La Liga rival Barcelona over a late move for Depay.
The 28-year-old is not the only Barcelona attacker to have emerged on Real Sociedad’s radar, with Martin Braithwaite also a target for the Basque outfit over a late move. But Depay will add more value to the Real Sociedad squad with his versatility and a keen eye for a goal.
However, with Manchester United also in the running to sign Depay, it will be interesting to see if Real Sociedad can succeed in bringing the Dutch international from fellow La Liga club Barcelona to the Reale Arena in the coming days.
