La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly interested in signing 21-year-old right-back Jeremie Frimpong from Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen.

According to reputed Spanish journalist Gerard Romero, Jeremie Frimpong is the subject of interest from Barcelona over a possible move in the ongoing transfer window. The 21-year-old Bayer Leverkusen right-back is one of five options on the Catalan club’s radar this summer.

Jeremie Frimpong has found a stable footing since joining Bayer Leverkusen from Celtic in January 2021. The Dutch full-back has previously represented Manchester City and Celtic, but the move to the Bundesliga has worked wonders for his career, as he has come leaps and bounds in the last 18 months.

The 21-year-old has turned out 50 times thus far for Bayer Leverkusen, chipping in with two goals and nine assists. And Frimpong’s progress has not gone unnoticed, with some of Europe’s most high-profile clubs, including Barcelona, setting their sights on him in the summer transfer window.

Barcelona had prioritised signing Cesar Azpilicueta from Chelsea in the ongoing transfer window. And the Chelsea captain seemed destined to join the Blaugrana for several weeks before snubbing them by signing a new contract with the west London club. And Azpilicueta’s decision has forced Barcelona to go back to the drawing board.

With Sergino Dest surplus to requirements at Camp Nou, the Catalan giants need to bring in a top-class right-back this summer. And according to Gerard Romero, five candidates have popped up on Barcelona’s radar, including Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Diogo Dalot, Juan Foyth and Thomas Meunier.

Frimpong is also a viable target for Barcelona, with the 21-year-old already one of the best right-backs in the Bundesliga. The Dutch defender will join Barcelona in top form while potentially offering the best years of his career if he lasts a decade and becomes the long-sought Dani Alves successor at Camp Nou.

Barcelona’s top target in the newly drawn up shortlist remains unclear. But Frimpong has a case to be the primary candidate to bolster the right-back department for the Blaugrana before the summer transfer window shuts down. It will be interesting to see the 21-year-old leaves Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen after just 18 months.
