Chelsea will reportedly lodge an offer to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona amid interest from Premier League rival Manchester United.

According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Chelsea will soon submit a bid to secure the services of Frenkie de Jong in the summer transfer window. The Barcelona midfielder is also a target for the Premier League rival Manchester United, but the Dutch midfielder does not want to join the Red Devils.

Frenkie de Jong will still be a Barcelona player this time next month if he has his way. But the 25-year-old unfortunately does not have his fate in his hands, with Barcelona transfer-listing him to balance their books, lighten the wage bill and register their new signings in the summer transfer window.

The Dutch midfielder has arguably been one of the most reliable performers for the Blaugrana since arriving from Ajax three years ago. But de Jong is Barcelona’s cash cow as he is one of their highest earners, with his deferred wages also posing a problem for the Catalan club. Such a situation has captured the attention of Chelsea and Manchester United.

The interest from Chelsea stems from the advancing years of Jorginho and N’Golo Kante. The two midfield stalwarts are on the wrong side of 30, with the duo also entering the final year of their contracts with Chelsea. The Blues thus need to be aware of the market opportunities and sign a replacement if either player leaves this summer.

Frenkie de Jong has consequently emerged as a viable target for the west Londoners, who are ready to table a bid to sign the Dutch midfielder. But Chelsea will have to fend off stiff competition from Manchester United to secure the services of the Barcelona ace in the summer transfer window.

Recent reports have claimed that the Red Devils are preparing their final offer to sign de Jong from Barcelona. But de Jong does not intend to join Manchester United in the summer transfer window as he does not want to play in the UEFA Europa League in the upcoming season. And with the 25-year-old open to joining Chelsea, Manchester United’s prospects do not appear bright.
