Frenkie de Jong is reportedly open to joining Chelsea amid interest from Manchester United, as his Barcelona future remains uncertain.

According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Chelsea’s hopes of signing Frenkie de Jong in the summer transfer window should rise, with the Barcelona midfielder open to joining the Blues. But the Dutch international will still prefer to move to Bayern Munich if given a choice to choose his next destination.

The speculations surrounding Frenkie de Jong’s situation at FC Barcelona have grown like wildfire. The 25-year-old finds himself in a spot of bother at Camp Nou through no fault of his own, with Barcelona desperate to offload him to lighten their wage bill and register new signings.

The Catalan giants are also eager to cash in on de Jong as he is due to earn wages that he agreed to defer to help the club during their financial crisis in the last two years. Such a situation has left the Barcelona midfielder staring at an uncertain future amid interest from Manchester United and Chelsea.

The Red Devils have been hot on the heels of the Dutch midfielder for months, but they have done little to convince him to join them, with his deferred wages the biggest stumbling block in his pursuit. Manchester United will need to bring in a creative midfielder to fill the void left by the exit of Paul Pogba as a free agent this summer.

While de Jong is a viable target to replace Pogba, the Barcelona midfielder’s reluctance to depart from Camp Nou means a move to Manchester United is unlikely. In addition, Manchester United will face stiff competition from Chelsea in the race to sign de Jong this summer.

Recent reports have claimed that Chelsea might soon table a bid to sign the 25-year-old midfielder. And with Jorginho and N’Golo Kante well into their thirties, the Blues need to bring in a creative midfielder who is also solid in the defensive phases. The Barcelona man fits the bill perfectly, and he is set to hand Chelsea a boost as he is open to joining them this summer.

While de Jong prefers to join Bayern Munich if given a choice, he will bite the bullet and move to Chelsea if he does not have any other alternative. So a move to Manchester United appears unlikely as we move into the final month of the summer transfer window.
