Kalvin Phillips is the latest player to join Manchester City this summer, with the English international completing a £42 million move to the Etihad.

Premier League champions Manchester City have made an official statement to confirm that they have secured the services of Kalvin Phillips. The English international has put pen to a six-year contract lasting until June 30, 2028, with the Citizens shelling out £42 million to prise him away from Leeds United.

Kalvin Phillips is a boyhood Leeds United fan and was on the books of the West Yorkshire club since joining them from Wortley as a 15-year-old in 2010. The 26-year-old made swift progress in the Whites’ youth setup before making his first-team debut in 2015.

The Englishman subsequently grew in stature at Elland Road, becoming a pivotal figure for Leeds as they made their long-awaited return to the Premier League two years ago. Phillips made 232 appearances for Leeds, chipping in with 13 goals and 13 assists. But his twelve-year association with the club has ended, as he has joined Manchester City.

The interest from Manchester City emerged as soon as Fernandinho announced his departure from the Etihad ahead of the summer transfer window. The veteran Brazilian midfielder has since returned to his homeland, joining Athletico Paranaense. And the Premier League champions wasted no time in pursuing the English international.

Manchester City quickly reached an agreement to sign Phillips, blowing other suitors out of the water. And the Citizens have now officiated the transfer, announcing that Phillips has signed a six-year contract that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until June 30, 2028. Upon completing his move to Manchester City, the 26-year-old appeared admittedly chuffed.

Phillips said, “I am absolutely delighted to have joined Manchester City. City have again proved to the best team in the country with an amazing squad and a manager in Pep Guardiola who is rightly considered to be the finest in the world.”

“To be able to play under Pep and learn from him and his coaching staff as well as be part of such a fantastic squad is a prospect that I am incredibly excited about. City are a world-class club with world-class staff and facilities and it’s a dream come true to have joined the club. Now I can’t wait to get started and to look to try and help the team to go on and achieve more success.”

While the official statement does not mention a transfer fee, Daily Telegraph has claimed that Manchester City shelled out £42 million to secure the services of the English international. And with that, Phillips has become the fourth player who will bolster Pep Guardiola’s squad this summer after Erling Haaland, Julian Alvarez, and Stefan Ortega.
