La Liga heavyweights Barcelona have reportedly completed their second summer signing, with Andreas Christensen completing a Bosman move to Camp Nou.

Catalan giants Barcelona have made an official statement to confirm that they have secured the services of Andreas Christensen. The former Chelsea defender has put pen to a four-year contract lasting until June 30, 2026, with the Blaugrana setting his release clause at €500 million.

Andreas Christensen spent his formative years at two Danish clubs – Skjold Birkerod and Brondby IF – before completing his footballing education at Chelsea. The 26-year-old subsequently spent a decade at Chelsea and had been growing in stature in the past half a decade after returning from a two-year loan stint with Borussia Monchengladbach.

The Danish international, who made 160 senior appearances for Chelsea, played some of his best football under the tutelage of Thomas Tuchel in the last 18 months. But Christensen has been a free agent since the turn of the month after running down his contract with Chelsea. And his next destination is Barcelona.

Barcelona prioritised signing Christensen to bolster their defensive unit this summer, with the Dane’s free-agent status making him an attractive proposition. The Catalan giants have targetted Chelsea this summer, with Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso also on their radar.

But signing Christensen has seemed to be a formality for months, as Barcelona had reached a verbal agreement to sign him on a Bosman move months ago. And the 26-year-old is a handy addition to the first-team squad at Camp Nou, considering the struggles of Samuel Umtiti, Clement Lenglet and Oscar Mingueza. The trio will likely depart from Camp Nou this summer.

At the same time, Gerard Pique is approaching the end of his glittering career, while Eric Garcia has blown hot and cold since arriving on a Bosman move last summer. So Christensen had emerged as a viable target for Barcelona, who will likely look to sign another centre-back this summer. And the official announcement has arrived bang on time following Joan Laporta’s recent comments.

Christensen is the second player to join Barcelona in the summer transfer window after the Blaugrana announced the signing of Franck Kessie earlier on Monday. The former Chelsea centre-back will sign a four-year contract with Barcelona when the Catalan giants formally present him to Camp Nou on Thursday, July 7. His release clause is set at €500 million.
