Premier League champions Manchester City are reportedly open to offering a £77,000-a-week deal to sign Barcelona prodigy Gavi, a target for Liverpool.

According to a report by Daily Mirror, Gavi is the subject of interest from Manchester City over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The Barcelona prodigy is also a target for Liverpool, with both the Premier League clubs ready to offer him a lucrative £77,000-a-week contract.

Gavi is the latest success story to be borne out of Barcelona’s financial woes, which have forced the last couple of managers to fast-track some promising youngsters to the first-team squad. Gavi made his first-team debut for Barcelona at the onset of the 2021/22 season before growing in stature enormously during the campaign.

The 17-year-old turned out 47 times for Barcelona this past season, chipping in with two goals and six assists. At the same time, he has also established a foothold in the Spanish national team and become a pivotal figure under Luis Enrique. But Gavi’s contract situation has left Barcelona in a spot of bother while capturing the attention of several European bigwigs, including Liverpool and Manchester City.

Recent reports had claimed that the Reds are ready to offer Gavi a lucrative contract to prise him away from Barcelona in the summer transfer window. The player’s economical release clause is unlikely to pose a problem for Liverpool either, making him a viable target as Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara approach the final phases of their respective careers.

But Liverpool will need to fend off stiff competition from Manchester City to secure the services of the 17-year-old Barcelona prodigy. Like Liverpool, the Premier League champions are open to proposing an attractive contract offer for Gavi, worth around £77,000 per week.

The contract offer will be a big jump from his current £20,000-a-week salary while also usurping Barcelona’s contract offer. With Bernardo Silva heavily linked with a possible summer departure, Gavi could be an option worth considering for Manchester City.

But Barcelona president Joan Laporta recently revealed that the Catalan giants are closing in on tying Gavi to a new contract. The development will come as a blow for Liverpool and Manchester City, but it will be interesting to see if the two English giants turn the Spanish international’s head, even though he wants to extend his stay at Camp Nou.
