Spanish defensive duo Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso are reportedly keen on leaving Chelsea to join Barcelona in the summer.

According to a report by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso are keen on embarking on new adventures in the summer transfer window. The two Chelsea defenders want to join Barcelona and hope the Blues will grant them low-cost transfers ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Cesar Azpilicueta is one of the greatest players in Chelsea’s modern-day history, spending the past decade at Stamford Bridge while reprising every defensive role for the Blues. The 32-year-old has made over 450 appearances for Chelsea while winning every trophy during his stint with the west Londoners.

On the other hand, Marcos Alonso joined Chelsea nearly six years ago and has been an inconsistent performer during his spell in west London. The Spaniard has excelled when playing as a left wing-back but has been a liability as a left-back. Nonetheless, he remains a highly sought-after player in the market, just like his compatriot Azpilicueta, with the duo heavily linked with Barcelona.

Barcelona will enter the summer transfer window hoping to complete a swift rebuild under Xavi Hernandez. The Catalan club’s January business has largely been successful. And they hope to emulate that success ahead of the 2022/23 season by making efficient signings, which will mostly comprise cost-effective transfers.

Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen is reportedly on the brink of joining Barcelona in a Bosman move, with Franck Kessie also set to arrive on a free transfer. But Barcelona’s summer transfer business will not end with the duo’s acquisition, as they are also keen on signing a right-back and a left-back.

That is where Azpilicueta and Alonso enter the picture, with the Spanish defensive duo emerging as targets for the Blaugrana. According to recent reports, Barcelona and Alonso are in contact with each other over a summer move. The Catalan giants are also confident about signing Azpilicueta. And according to Mundo Deportivo, the Chelsea captain and his compatriot want to join Barcelona in the summer.

Azpilicueta and Alonso hope that Chelsea will grant them the opportunity to join Barcelona in low-cost transfers. But the Blues will likely battle hard to keep hold of the Spanish defensive duo, especially considering they will need to sign two centre-backs to replace Christensen and Antonio Rudiger.
