Real Madrid will reportedly not make a move for 18-year-old German international Florian Wirtz until the summer transfer window of 2023.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Real Madrid will put off launching the offensive for Florian Wirtz till the summer transfer window of next year. The German international will not leave Bayer Leverkusen this year, with the Bundesliga club set to keep hold of him for another season at the very least.

Florian Wirtz has come a long way since joining Bayer Leverkusen from 1.FC Koln in January 2020. While he was initially assigned to the German outfit’s under-19 side, the teenage prodigy took no time to establish a foothold in the first-team setup and has essentially become Kai Havertz’s successor since last season.

The 18-year-old has enjoyed an excellent 2021/22 campaign thus far, playing a key role in Bayer Leverkusen’s ascent to the third spot in the Bundesliga standings. Wirtz has ten goals and 13 assists in 28 appearances across all competitions this term. At the same time, the player has also become a full-fledged German international while capturing the attention of several European bigwigs, including Real Madrid.

The interest from Real Madrid stems from the advancing years of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. While Wirtz will not be a like-for-like replacement for either midfield stalwart, the youngster might be able to shoulder the creative responsibility when the two start getting phased out of the first-team picture.

Initial reports had suggested that Real Madrid could launch the offensive for Wirtz in the summer transfer window. But as per the latest update, the Merengues are putting off a move till next year, with the teenage whizkid likely to represent Bayer Leverkusen in the 2022/23 season.

Real Madrid might also need to be wary of the interest from several other high profile clubs across Europe, as Wirtz has also been linked with Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Premier League marquee clubs. As for how much it could cost to sign him, Bayer Leverkusen could demand around €100 million to part with the 18-year-old German international.

For now, what appears to be certain is that Florian Wirtz will not be leaving Bayer Leverkusen in the summer transfer window. It will be interesting to see if Real Madrid will win the race to sign the 18-year-old next year or if some other club prises him away instead.
