Paris Saint-Germain will welcome newly promoted Le Mans to the Parc des Princes on Saturday, with the defending Ligue 1 champions looking to put together a convincing home performance against one of the surprise packages of the early season.
Le Mans have made an encouraging return to the French top flight, sitting ninth after five matches and only two points behind PSG. Patrick Videira’s side have already demonstrated that they are not simply looking to survive, either, with their aggressive approach producing entertaining matches and a 2-1 victory over Lorient last month.
PSG, meanwhile, remain the overwhelming favourites, but their start to the domestic campaign has been less convincing than expected. Luis Enrique’s side have collected only three victories from their last seven Ligue 1 home matches and are already five points behind league leaders Monaco. That makes this a potentially important fixture for the champions and another dropped point at the Parc des Princes would increase the pressure on a team expected to challenge on every front.
Meanwhile, Le Mans have quickly adapted to life in Ligue 1 and Patrick Videira’s team have adopted an attacking philosophy rather than sitting permanently in a low block, and that approach finally produced a deserved reward against Lorient. Their 2-1 victory represented their first top-flight win since beating PSG in May 2010 and came after a series of entertaining draws and a dramatic 3-2 defeat against Rennes.
The defeat to Rennes demonstrated both sides of Le Mans’ personality. They recovered from two goals down and looked capable of earning something from the match, only for Djibril Sidibe’s 68th-minute dismissal to leave them vulnerable late on. Le Mans now have an opportunity to record consecutive Ligue 1 victories for the first time since April 2009.
The problem is the opponent as PSG may not have been at their best domestically, but they possess considerably more individual quality than anyone Le Mans have encountered so far. The visitors will therefore have to balance their attacking ambition with the need to protect themselves against PSG’s transitions.
For all their quality, PSG have not been especially convincing at Parc des Princes in Ligue 1 recently. They have won only three of their last seven home league matches, while Monaco have inflicted two of their three home defeats in the top flight during 2026.
Even more unusually, PSG have failed to win consecutive Ligue 1 home matches since putting together a run of seven victories between November and February. That inconsistency explains why the champions find themselves five points behind AS Monaco despite having plenty of time to recover.
Luis Enrique will nevertheless take encouragement from the quality available to him. The international break may have benefited Desire Doue, who scored and assisted for France in their impressive 4-1 comeback against Belgium. With Ousmane Dembele still without a Ligue 1 goal this season, Doue could be one of the players capable of injecting some much-needed attacking spark into PSG’s domestic campaign.
Le Mans may have won the last top-flight meeting between the clubs, but the more recent competitive record belongs firmly to PSG. The Parisians have won the last three competitive meetings, with victories of 2-0, 4-1 and 2-0 across domestic cup competitions in 2011, 2019 and 2025 and hat represents an 8-1 aggregate score across those three games. Le Mans will therefore need to produce something substantially different from their recent meetings if they are to cause another upset.
The tactical contrast should make this particularly interesting as Le Mans are expected to line up in a 3-5-2, giving them an extra central defender while allowing the wing-backs to push forward. The system should help them defend PSG’s wide attacks while still providing an avenue for quick counter-attacks.
PSG’s 4-3-3 should give them numerical superiority in possession. João Neves, Vitinha and Fabián Ruiz can circulate the ball and attempt to move Le Mans’ midfield three from side to side. The key will be the home side’s ability to exploit the spaces around Le Mans’ wing-backs.
When Bamba and Larouci advance, PSG’s wingers can attack the channels behind them. Achraf Hakimi can also push forward from right-back, potentially creating a 2v1 situation against the Le Mans left side. The Hard Tackle takes a look at how both sides could line up and what tactics they might employ on the day.
Team News & Tactics
PSG
PSG have only one confirmed absentee, with Senny Mayulu unavailable. There are also doubts over Ferran Torres and Warren Zaïre-Emery, who are dealing with ankle and thigh problems respectively. Torres’s possible absence is particularly unfortunate given PSG’s lack of attacking production in Ligue 1. Additionally, Ousmane Dembele and Nuno Mendes will get some rest this weekend.
The club’s main attackers have yet to find their best domestic form, while Dembele has surprisingly failed to score in Ligue 1 and has not found the net since early April. That could encourage Luis Enrique to give Desire Doue an important attacking role after his excellent international performances.
PSG are expected to line up in a 4-3-3, with Matvei Safonov in goal and Achraf Hakimi, Marquinhos, Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez forming the defensive line. Joao Neves, Vitinha and Fabian Ruiz should make up the midfield three, while Maghnes Akliouche, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Doue are expected to form the attacking unit.
The midfield unit should allow PSG to establish territorial dominance. Vitinha can dictate circulation, while Neves provides energy and ball recovery and Ruiz can move into advanced positions. Hakimi’s positioning will be especially important. Against Le Mans’ 3-5-2, he can push extremely high and force the visitors’ wing-back into a defensive position.
That would potentially leave Akliouche more freedom to move inside and combine with Kvaratskhelia and Doue. PSG should also look to switch play quickly. Moving the ball from one flank to the other can force Le Mans’ five-man defensive line to shift repeatedly, eventually creating gaps for runners arriving centrally.
The danger for PSG is overcommitting and if both full-backs push high simultaneously, Le Mans will have opportunities to counter into the channels. PSG’s midfield must therefore maintain enough defensive protection to prevent Mafouta and Diallo from receiving the ball in open space.
Probable Lineup (4-3-3): Safanov; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Hernandez; Neves, Vitinha, Ruiz; Akliouche, Kvaratskhelia, Doue
Le Mans
Le Mans have no additional injury absences, although Erwan Colas and Lucas Buades will be assessed before the match. Their biggest setback is undoubtedly Adil Bourabaa, whose ankle injury rules him out for several weeks after he had produced three goals and two assists in five appearances.
Louis Mafouta, who has also scored three times this season, is therefore expected to take on greater responsibility alongside Habib Diallo. Le Mans should retain their 3-5-2, with Nicolas Kocik behind Raul Torrente, Samuel Yohou, and Harold Voyer. Rayan Bamba, Lucas Bretelle, Alexandre Lauray, Jean Vercruysse, and Yasser Larouci should form the midfield five, with Habib Diallo and Louis Mafouta leading the attack.
Le Mans should not abandon the aggressive approach that has served them well so far. Their best chance of getting something from the game may actually be to attack PSG selectively rather than defending for 90 minutes.
The wing-backs can provide the width while the front two occupy PSG’s centre-backs. When possession is won, the first pass should ideally find Mafouta or Diallo quickly, allowing the midfield runners to support them. Defensively, the three centre-backs should remain narrow.
The biggest danger will come when PSG’s wingers move inside and create uncertainty over whether the wing-backs or central defenders should step out. Le Mans also need to avoid conceding early and their attacking philosophy becomes much more dangerous when they are level or ahead, but an early PSG goal could force them into a more open game that heavily favours the champions.
Probable Lineup (3-5-2): Kocik; Torrente, Yohou, Voyer; Bamba, Bretelle, Lauray, Vercruysse, Larouci; Diallo, Mafouta

Player to Watch
Desire Doue
The PSG attacker enters this match after producing an excellent international performance for France, scoring and assisting in their 4-1 comeback victory over Belgium. That contribution could provide exactly the confidence boost Doue needs after PSG’s attackers have struggled to make an impact in Ligue 1.
The youngster’s ability to start from the left, move inside and combine with Kvaratskhelia should pose a serious problem for Le Mans’ defensive structure. The 3-5-2 gives Le Mans numerical protection centrally, but it can leave space around the outside of the central defenders when the wing-backs move forward.
Doue is capable of exploiting precisely those spaces and with Dembele still searching for his first Ligue 1 goal of the campaign, Doue has an opportunity to become PSG’s most dangerous attacking player on Saturday.
Prediction
PSG 3-1 Le Mans
Le Mans deserve considerable credit for their start to life back in Ligue 1, and their attacking mentality makes them capable of troubling PSG if the champions become complacent. However, the visitors are missing Bourabaa, one of their most productive players, while PSG possess too much individual quality across the pitch. The champions should dominate possession, create sustained pressure and eventually find ways through Le Mans’ defensive structure.
