Thomas Tuchel comments on Elliot Anderson move to Manchester City

Manchester City have agreed a £116 million deal with Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson, a fee that would make the 23-year-old midfielder the most expensive British footballer in history.

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has insisted the upcoming move to Manchester City will not distract Elliot Anderson from commitments at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

Forest have granted Anderson permission to undergo a medical, though discussions remain ongoing over the timing, as the Ebglishman is currently with England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Tuchel added that Anderson remains fully committed to England and expects the formalities to be completed before the Three Lions’ next World Cup fixture. The German tactician also confirmed there are no fitness concerns surrounding the midfielder.

“I think there’s a high chance it’s sorted before the round of 32,” he said to Sky Sports, before adding, “He plays like he owns the place. There were no concerns [over fitness], the medical staff gave the green light, he has no injury.”

Anderson deserves a big move

Anderson has enjoyed a remarkable rise since joining Nottingham Forest from Newcastle United in 2024, establishing himself as one of England’s brightest young midfielders. His displays in the Premier League, full of composure, defensive work, and tactical intelligence, prompted Manchester City to make him their primary target to strengthen midfield this summer.

Personal terms are not expected to present any obstacles, with all major aspects of the transfer now agreed between the clubs. The only remaining issue is arranging Anderson’s medical in line with England’s World Cup schedule before the transfer can be officially completed.

Tuchel expects the formalities to be completed before England’s next World Cup fixture, provided scheduling allows. The only remaining hurdle is arranging the former Newcastle United prospect’s medical around international commitments. Should the move be finalised, Anderson will strengthen Manchester City’s midfield as they prepare for a new era.

The Citizens need more cover in the midfield, especially for Rodri. The move for Anderson could prove ideal for them as they look to wrest back control in the middle of the park and compete for major trophies once again.
