Shaka Hislop claimed David Raya has been a better goalkeeper than Andre Onana but did absolve the Cameroonian of any blame.
The summer window saw many top clubs sign a new goalkeeper, with Manchester United at the forefront of their extensive search. From Diogo Costa to Andre Onana, Erik ten Hag searched for an array of options to fulfil the very specific role he demanded from David De Gea’s successor.
Eventually, Manchester United decided to pay close to £50 million to sign Onana from Inter Milan. Following the Cameroonian’s season with the Italian side, which saw them feature in the Champions League final. The 27-year-old was somewhat considered a major signing for the club.
As the season has progressed, Onana has shown frailties in his role, as he was at fault for several goals the team conceded. He even apologised for his error during the Bayern Munich game, which the Bavarians eventually won by a single-goal margin.
Ten Hag has faith in his keeper and will likely keep the Cameroonian between the sticks for the foreseeable future. If not, Manchester United have the option to turn to Altay Biyandir after the Turkish star also arrived late in the transfer window.
There are question marks over Onana’s season so far. Now pundit Shaka Hislop claimed Arsenal signing David Raya has had a better season than the Manchester United star. His comments appeared on the ESPN FC YouTube channel, as he absolved Onana from the mistakes of his teammates.
Hislop said, “Onana’s started slowly for Manchester United. I don’t think that’s all his fault at all.
“Raya’s started on the bench for Arsenal, has found himself in the starting XI and I don’t think he’s done anything wrong in all honesty. It’s been a solid start from him so that was easy.”
Raya, for his part, has had a fantastic period between the sticks. The former Brentford star arrived at Arsenal as the second choice to Aaron Ramsdale but has since taken over the No.1 role from the Englishman. As things stand, he might continue to retain the position, but the competition for places at the Gunners remains intense.
In his four games for Arsenal, Raya has kept three clean sheets. Mikel Arteta likes what the Spaniard brings to the team. In truth, he’s had a far better season in the short span than Andre Onana or, as some may argue, over every other keeper in the league this season.
