Paul Merson tells Arsenal to sign Conor Gallagher

Paul Merson has urged Arsenal to sign Conor Gallagher in the summer as he believes the Chelsea mainstay would fit in well in Mikel Arteta’s plans.

The summer transfer window might bring in a few surprises, such as Chelsea selling one of their top performers this season, Conor Gallagher. Todd Boehly has long planned this sort of sale to boost the Blues chances of beating PSR breaches, and selling midfield mainstay might bring some parity to their accounting books.

Surely, Chelsea might benefit from his sale, which might fetch £45 million, as they have been unsure about his long-term future despite brief talks about handing the midfielder a new deal. They have invested quite heavily in new signings in midfield, and that might help them close the gap if the England international were to depart.

Tottenham have been leading the race for Gallagher as the North Londoners have seemingly kept tabs since the end of last summer’s window. Whether Gallagher is open to making the switch to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium remains the question, as there are loyalties and family ties at stake for the midfielder.

Now, Paul Merson has thrown the idea to his former side, Arsenal, to bring the £45 million Chelsea mainstay to the Emirates. Mikel Arteta has been looking for a midfielder. Merson, in his comments on Soccer Saturday via TBR Football, believes Gallagher will give everything on the pitch and fit in nicely alongside Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard.

Merson said, “If they sell Conor Gallagher, it’s five steps back. I am a big Conor Gallagher fan; he gives you absolutely everything. I think he gets into virtually every team, probably Man City. He doesn’t get into any other team I think he gets into.”

“I would even go as far as to say at Arsenal, you would go and get him at Arsenal where you have got Rice, Odegaard and Gallagher. He gives you everything. He gives you energy, he gives you goals and he closes down. He is a fan’s dream. Everybody wants a trier.”

Gallagher has certainly been one of Chelsea’s best performers, possibly even second on that list after Cole Palmer. While many Blues fans will not like the idea of his departure to Tottenham, they will loathe him and the club’s hierarchy if he was to join Arsenal.

Gallagher has reportedly rejected the idea of joining Newcastle United, which might indicate his willingness to stay in London and continue his career there. Hence, the idea of Arsenal coming into the mix could become interesting. However, everything will depend on whether Arteta sees him as an ideal addition, mainly because his price is within range for the Gunners.
