Mauricio Pochettino confident of managing Levi Colwill next season

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill has been linked with a move away from the club this summer, with Liverpool interested in him.

A report from 90min has relayed recent comments by Mauricio Pochettino. The newly-appointed Chelsea manager has been talking about the future of Levi Colwill, a target for Liverpool. And he is confident of holding on to the 20-year-old defender.

Widespread reports have claimed that Liverpool are interested in signing the 20-year-old defender. Colwill was on loan at Brighton and Hove Albion last season and the Seagulls were keen on signing him permanently as well.

The 20-year-old is highly rated in England and he has a big future ahead of him. He is expected to develop into a world-class defender in the coming years and he could be a key player for club and country.

It is no surprise that clubs like Liverpool are keen on signing the player. The Reds need to bring in upgrades on Joel Matip and Joe Gomez. Meanwhile, Chelsea will look to tie the player down to a new long-term contract and keep him at the club for as long as possible.

Speaking to the media regarding Colwill’s future, Pochettino has revealed that the 20-year-old belongs to Chelsea and will continue at Stamford Bridge. The Argentine manager was impressed with the talented young defender’s performance against Brighton in the pre-season as well Furthermore, he added that Colwill could be one of the greatest centre-backs in England in the near future.

“We don’t need to make a statement about anything. He’s our player and he’s going to continue with us,” the Argentine said. “I am happy with him, his performance was good today, better than what I expected because it’s only the first game with us after the season in Brighton. I think he can be one of the greatest centre-backs in England. He is going to be part of our team.”

The defender will probably hope for regular game time at Stamford Bridge next season. But it remains to be seen whether Chelsea can provide him with first-team assurances. A player of his calibre will not want to sit on the bench and Chelsea must look to convince him that he is a key part of their project going forward.

Chelsea need defensive reinforcements after the ACL injury to Wesley Fofana and the impending departure of Kalidou Koulibaly. They cannot afford to let Colwill leave the club in the summer and weaken their defence further.
