Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo had an underwhelming debut for Chelsea against West Ham United, and Jamie Carragher criticised him.

Moises Caicedo gave away a penalty during Chelsea’s 3-1 defeat at the hands of their London rivals, and Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher was not impressed. The youngster’s overall performance was quite underwhelming as well.

The Blues recently signed the former Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder for a British transfer record fee, and he was expected to transform them immediately. Liverpool agreed on a fee for the player as well, but he chose to move to Stamford Bridge instead.

The 21-year-old was a key player for Brighton, and he is certainly a prodigious talent with a big future ahead of him. Caicedo has proven himself in the Premier League over the past year, and there is no doubt that he could be a key player for Chelsea in the coming weeks.

The mediocre debut is unlikely to faze a player of his quality, and he will look to bounce back strongly and send out a statement with a strong performance in the coming weeks. The 21-year-old is undoubtedly one of the best young defensive midfielders around Europe right now, and he could form a solid partnership with Enzo Fernandez at the heart of Chelsea’s midfield.

Chelsea sanctioned the departure of N’Golo Kante earlier this summer, and the former Brighton midfielder has been brought in as the French international’s replacement. Speaking to Sky Sports (h/t TEAMtalk), Liverpool legend and pundit Jamie Carragher criticised the Chelsea signing’s performance and labelled it as a nightmare display.

Carragher believes that Caicedo’s lazy challenge led to the penalty which West Ham ended up converting. He said, “That man Caicedo has had a bit of a nightmare since he came on, you have to say. It’s a poor, lazy challenge. Emerson always knows he’ll get there before him. We all did watching it! He hasn’t started great since coming on.”

The 21-year-old will know that he failed to live up to the expectations on his debut, and it remains to be seen whether he can make amends. The Ecuador international is still quite young and he is likely to improve a lot with coaching and experience.

Working under a quality coach like Mauricio Pochettino will only help him improve further. Caicedo could develop into a world-class player in the coming seasons and Chelsea will have to be patient with him.
