Federico Chiesa told he made a mistake joining Liverpool, urged to join AS Roma

Juventus icon Angelo Di Livio believes Italian international Federico Chiesa made a mistake by joining Liverpool.

Former Juventus and Italy midfielder Angelo Di Livio has suggested that Federico Chiesa made a mistake by joining Liverpool and should return to Serie A, with a move to AS Roma potentially reviving his career.

Speaking to Retesport, Di Livio suggested that Chiesa made the wrong decision by moving to Anfield in the summer of 2024. The Italian has struggled to establish himself in England and could benefit from returning to a league where he previously enjoyed some of his best football.

Liverpool signed the winger from Juventus for an initial £10 million in August 2024, but the transfer has not worked out as either party would have hoped. Chiesa has made 51 appearances for the Merseyside club, contributing to 10 goals, but remains on the periphery of Liverpool’s starting XI.

“Chiesa? He made a mistake in joining Liverpool. A player who knows how to play football always knows how to do it. He needs to recover, but I’d take him since he can play on both flanks. With Gasperini, Chiesa would return to the national team,” Di Livio said.

In his first two seasons, he has failed to reach 1,000 minutes per season; in the ongoing campaign, he has managed just two minutes under Andoni Iraola. Injuries have undoubtedly disrupted Chiesa’s progress, but competition for places has also made it difficult for him to force his way into the starting XI.

Liverpool have regularly preferred other attacking options, leaving the Italian international facing an uncertain future despite having around 18 months remaining on his contract.

Chiesa could return to the Serie A soon

A return to Serie A would allow Chiesa to rebuild in a league he knows well, where he previously thrived. Chiesa knows Italian football well, having previously represented Fiorentina and Juventus, and should need little time to adapt to the demands of the competition.

Di Livio believes Gasperini is the manager to unlock Chiesa’s potential. Roma could provide Chiesa with a fresh start, while his ability to operate on either flank would give the Italian manager another versatile attacking option.

The former Juventus winger was once an important member of Italy’s national team, but his limited involvement at club level has affected his international prospects. A successful spell under Gasperini could potentially put him back in contention for an international recall.
