Liverpool attacker Federico Chiesa has been linked with a move away from the Merseyside club in recent months.
The Italian international has struggled to secure regular opportunities since joining the Premier League club, and he needs to leave to play more often. He will not want to sit on the bench at Liverpool at this stage of his career.
Chiesa is certainly good enough to play for a top club, and it remains to be seen whether Liverpool are prepared to sanction his departure. During a conversation with Gazzetta dello Sport, the player has now opened up about his situation at Liverpool and hopes to speak with the newly appointed Liverpool manager, Andoni Iraola, before deciding on his future.
“I started well, with minutes and goals, and I was happy. But then the year ended differently than I expected. But that’s football, too. The playing time. I’ve played very little since the start of 2026. I have a great relationship with Liverpool. In January, the club and Slot told me I couldn’t leave; they needed me, partly for numerical reasons. We were in a tight spot. I understood the situation and I was left smiling. Liverpool is always talked about; last year they helped me win the Premier League. And yet…”
“I repeat: I want to play. If I don’t find consistency in the Premier League, I’ll have to look elsewhere. I barely played in my first year at Liverpool, and in the last one, very little. I’ll go on a training camp in the US, then I’ll talk to the club and the new manager, Iraola, and we’ll see.”
Will Liverpool allow Chiesa to move on?
It is uncertain whether Iraola is prepared to give the Italian more opportunities next season, and the situation will gain more clarity once the Spaniard assumes charge of the first team in a few weeks. There is no doubt that he is a quality player, and he has shown that with club and country in the past.
The 28-year-old was exceptional during his time with Fiorentina and Juventus. He will look to return to that level. Liverpool needs more quality in the final third, and he could be a very useful backup option for them.
Meanwhile, Liverpool paid around £10 million for the attacker, and he could be available for a reasonable fee if they decide to sell him. There is little likelihood of a shortage of clubs looking to sign the player.
The player has shown his quality in Italy, and multiple Italian clubs could be keen on bringing him back to his homeland, with recent reports linking him with Como. Either way, Chiesa will need to sort out his future and focus on his football once again. It remains to be seen where he ends up.
