Aston Villa tipped to compete with Liverpool in Alex Scott race

Former Aston Villa striker Stan Collymore has urged the Birmingham-based club to break the bank for Liverpool target Alex Scott.

Stan Collymore has urged Aston Villa to push for Bournemouth sensation Alex Scott, who has been linked with a move to Liverpool. Aston Villa are expected to go big in the ongoing transfer window after securing a return to Champions League football.

While speaking to TEAMtalk, the former Aston Villa forward said, “As an Aston Villa fan, I would drive to Bournemouth, pick Alex Scott up, and drive him back to Villa Park,”

“When you see modern footballers with their lateral movement, there are few players who can do what he does, especially getting out of tight spaces. There’s no doubt about his ability, and that was shown in his involvement with the England squad during the friendlies.

“He’ll continue to progress, and he’ll want to be involved in the Nations League in the autumn as well as the Euros in two years.

“If I was any of the top six or seven teams, I would want him in my team. However, it is slightly different when it comes to Arsenal and City, as he’d more likely be a squad player for them, but with Aston Villa being in the Champions League, I’d be shocked if they weren’t asking for him…”

Scott came up through Bristol City’s academy and joined Bournemouth in the summer of 2023, where he has become integral to their setup. The 22-year-old midfielder played a significant role in their sixth-placed finish and Europa League qualification last season, featuring in 39 matches with over 3,000 minutes and five goal contributions.

Why Aston Villa should sign Scott?

While Scott prefers playing as a central midfielder, he is capable of featuring across multiple positions. His ability to control tempo and operate as a deep-lying playmaker stands out. His performances have attracted interest from top clubs, and so far he has rejected a new deal at Bournemouth.

Scott may have missed out on an England squad spot, but could join a bigger club this summer. However, Bournemouth would demand in excess of £80 million (€92.5m, $107m) with two years remaining on his contract.

Collymore has urged Villa to break their transfer record to sign Scott, viewing him as an ideal fit for their project under Unai Emery. His versatility and technical ability would complement Emery’s tactical approach, though Liverpool represent serious competition, particularly given Adoni Iraola’s reported move to Anfield.

Collymore added, “He’s definitely a Liverpool-type player, and they’d be a more attractive option than the other teams in the league. Whether he’d be on Liverpool’s radar, I’m not convinced. They’ve got lots of forwards and attacking-minded midfielders already,”

“But as an Aston Villa fan, if they can cobble the pennies together, I’d be more than happy to drive down to Bournemouth and pick him up on behalf of Unai Emery!”

Liverpool have a significant advantage with Iraola’s arrival, and are reportedly considering making an approach. Collymore is hoping Villa can move faster. A move to Birmingham may offer Scott clearer playing-time prospects under Emery compared to competing for minutes at Liverpool.
