Premier League heavyweights Manchester United are reportedly considering 41-year-old Bologna manager Thiago Motta as a replacement for Erik ten Hag.

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Thiago Motta is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils are in the market for a manager amid uncertainties surrounding the future of Erik ten Hag. And they have identified the 41-year-old Bologna manager as a potential replacement.

Thiago Motta is one of the most highly-rated young coaches in the world. An intelligent and visionary midfielder as a footballer, he spent his formative years in Brazil but remained in Europe throughout his senior career. The Sao Bernardo do Camp native represented Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Genoa, Inter Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain.

The former Italian international hung up his boots in 2018, entering the managerial world by taking charge of PSG’s under-19 side that year. But the 41-year-old has only coached Italian clubs thus far, managing Genoa, Spezia, and Bologna. And Motta’s stock has skyrocketed during his stint with Bologna.

Motta began his spell with Bologna in 2022 and has overseen a steady rise for the club in the last 18 months. The Red and Blues are fourth in the Serie A standings and in the driver’s seat to qualify for the UEFA Champions League ahead of bigger clubs like AS Roma, Lazio, and Napoli. So, his stock has skyrocketed, with several high-profile clubs setting their sights on him. He has now emerged as a target for Manchester United.

Manchester United’s interest in Thiago Motta stems from the uncertainties surrounding the future of Erik ten Hag. The Dutch tactician has overseen a horrendous campaign where the Red Devils have lost nearly as many games as they have lost. Ironically, Manchester United should have challenged for the Premier League title this season after winning a trophy last term.

So, it is hardly surprising that Manchester United might sack ten Hag soon. Meanwhile, the Red Devils have started compiling a list of candidates to replace the Dutchman, with Roberto De Zerbi and Ruben Amorim emerging as targets. But Motta is also a viable option for Manchester United.

The 41-year-old is one of the best young coaches in the world and can install an eye-catching brand of football at Old Trafford. But it will be interesting to see if the former PSG midfielder becomes a top target for Manchester United.
