Liverpool have indirectly approached Bayer Leverkusen as they look to appoint Xabi Alonso as their next boss.
According to a report by BILD, Liverpool are keen on having Xabi Alonso on their bench starting next season. The Merseyside club have been on the lookout for a new boss to succeed Jurgen Klopp at the club, and the Bayer Leverkusen boss is their top priority for the role.
Alonso’s incredible rise as manager
Xabi Alonso had quite a successful stint at Liverpool during his playing days, and they are keen on bringing him back to the club. While the 42-year-old is still in the initial phase of his managerial career, he has already made quite a name for himself.
Bayer Leverkusen are currently top of the Bundesliga, and they are yet to lose a game this term. They have been playing an attractive and attacking brand of football and are on course to break Bayern Munich’s title-winning streak.
Alonso’s work at the German club has attracted a lot of attention. Two of his former clubs, Bayern Munich and Liverpool, are ready to battle it out for his signatures. The English club are aware of Bayern’s interest in him and have already started making moves to ensure they can land him at the club. According to multiple reports, Alonso would prefer to move to England.
Liverpool’s approach and the offer on the table for Alonso
The Merseyside club have already held positive talks with Inaki Ibanez, the 42-year-old’s representative. They have made an initial approach for the Bayer Leverkusen manager via the representatives. While it is still an indirect approach, the Bundesliga leaders are now well aware of Liverpool’s interest.
Despite the interest, Leverkusen are quite confident of keeping him at the club. But, in the end, it might depend on Alonso whose camp has held optimistic talks with his former club. And, as per TEAMtalk, the Merseyside club have offered him a three-year contract.
While talks continue, if an agreement is reached, the announcements will only take place once Klopp has left Anfield. The former Real Madrid midfielder has done wonders at Bayer Leverkusen and has loved his time there. But he considers the Liverpool job too big an opportunity to turn down.
