Chelsea owners are keeping faith in Mauricio Pochettino to lead the club project despite Chelsea’s terrible start to the season.
According to Football Insider, there’s “no panic at Stamford Bridge just yet” as Chelsea owners keep faith in Mauricio Pochettino. Talks of a sack picked momentum after yet another defeat for the Argentine boss, but the club hierarchy remains firmly behind their managerial choice.
One win and two draws have seen Chelsea rack up five points in six Premier League games so far. On Sunday, Aston Villa got the better of them at Stamford Bridge to inflict a third defeat of the season already, with their second at Stamford Bridge this season.
Chelsea’s performances have been terrible this campaign after their expensive signings failed to make a mark. Big summer signing Mouses Caicedo has so far proved disastrous in that expensively assembled midfield, while Enzo Fernandez has also yet to perform.
There are others in different positions, with some sections lamenting the loss of summer signing Christopher Nkunku’s injury as reasons for their goalscoring problems. Chelsea do not have a goal to their name this month, having drawn blanks in their three games in September.
The Villa loss increased talk of a potential dismissal of Pochettino from the managerial post. Todd Boehly had overseen at least three managers before the Argentine’s arrival, but the former Tottenham boss arrived after a thorough process.
As things stand, there is “no panic at Stamford Bridge just yet”, meaning the Chelsea owners are backing Pochettino to lead the project. The Argentine will certainly come under pressure to improve results and get points on board immediately.
However, they took a similar stance with Graham Potter, when in truth, the Englishman had a better record than the Argentine from as many games last season. Yet, the former Brighton man got the sack when results did not go Chelsea’s way.
While the club hierarchy are currently backing Pochettino, another set of bad results could bring back the talk of a possible sack soon enough. After the next international break, Chelsea faces Arsenal, Man City, Newcastle United and Brighton, among others, as the fixture list between October 21 and December 7 looks like a daunting task.
There’s a firm belief that this period could make or break Pochettino’s future as well as Chelsea’s season. As things stand, some have already discounted them from competing for a top-four place, and more bad results could make it difficult to qualify for European football altogether.
