Premier League champions Manchester City are reportedly in pole position to sign Erling Haaland, a target for Real Madrid.

According to a report by Football Insider, Manchester City might have moved into the driver’s seat in the race to Erling Haaland. The prolific Borussia Dortmund marksman is also a target for Real Madrid but might arrive at the Etihad Stadium in the summer transfer window due to his father’s connections with the Premier League champions.

Erling Haaland has established himself as one of the best strikers in Europe since bursting onto the limelight in the 2019/20 season. The Norwegian striker joined Borussia Dortmund in January 2020 and has become a goal machine in the last two years.

To date, Haaland has amassed a staggering record of 80 goals and 21 assists in 79 appearances for Borussia Dortmund. But the 21-year-old marksman could leave the Bundesliga club in the summer transfer window to seek a better project. And the possibility of snapping up the youngster has captured the attention of Real Madrid and Manchester City.

The interest from Real Madrid is understandable considering Karim Benzema is well into his thirties. While the Frenchman is in the form of his life, his advancing years are prompting Real Madrid to lay down a succession plan for him, making Haaland a viable target.

Recent reports have also claimed that the prolific Norwegian striker prefers joining Real Madrid, but it looks like Manchester City could be leading the race to sign him. The interest from the Premier League champions might be a tad-bit surprising, considering Julian Alvarez is set to arrive at the Etihad in the summer.

But the Argentine is not a natural striker, meaning Haaland could be the viable successor for Sergio Aguero that the Citizens have been seeking since last summer. Recent reports have claimed that Manchester City will be providing stiff competition to Real Madrid in the summer, and it looks like they are in pole position to land him.

According to Football Insider, Manchester City might benefit from their connections with Haaland’s father Alf-Inge, who is coaxing his son to join the English giants. But with nothing set in stone yet, one can be sure that Real Madrid will aim to leapfrog Manchester City in the race to sign the 21-year-old from Bundesliga heavyweights Borussia Dortmund.
