Real Madrid defender Eder Militao has reportedly emerged on the radar of Chelsea over a possible move in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish publication AS, Eder Militao is the subject of interest from Chelsea over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The Blues intend to submit an enquiry to Real Madrid in the coming months, although a transfer is highly unlikely.

Eder Militao joined Real Madrid from FC Porto in July 2019 and has since come a long way at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Brazilian international initially struggled to get going, as Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane were ahead of him in the pecking order. But after a difficult maiden campaign with Los Blancos, the player became a regular due to Ramos’ injury woes last season.

Following Ramos and Varane’s departure last summer, the 24-year-old has become a pivotal figure for Real Madrid. No other outfield player has raked in more game-time than Militao this term, with the Brazilian defender amassing 2,724 minutes of action across 30 appearances. Militao’s exploits for Real Madrid have not gone unnoticed, with Chelsea keen on signing him.

The interest from Chelsea stems from the rampant uncertainties surrounding the futures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen. In addition to the two natural centre-backs, captain Cesar Azpilicueta also faces an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge, with all three defenders linked with Real Madrid.

With at least one of the three defenders expected to leave in the summer transfer window, Chelsea will need to enter the transfer market for a replacement. To that end, Eder Militao has emerged as a viable target for the Blues, with manager Thomas Tuchel personally requesting the club to secure his services ahead of the 2022/23 season.

The west Londoners intend to test the water for the 24-year-old in the coming months, although a summer transfer might be unlikely. While Militao is one of the lowest earners at Real Madrid, he is content at the club amid his growing importance and might not consider a move to Chelsea.

With the Brazilian defender unlikely to leave Real Madrid, Chelsea will have to set sights elsewhere in search of a central defender, with Matthijs de Ligt among their key targets. As for Militao, the player is set to remain at Real Madrid for the foreseeable future.
