Real Madrid will need to fend off Chelsea in the race to sign Corentin Tolisso, with the Blues reportedly eyeing him as a replacement for Saul Niguez.

According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Corentin Tolisso is the subject of interest from Chelsea over a possible Bosman move in the summer transfer window. The Bayern Munich midfielder is also a target for Real Madrid.

Corentin Tolisso joined Bayern Munich from Lyon in July 2017 and has since endured a topsy turvy ride at the Allianz Arena. The French international started his stint with the Bundesliga champions strongly and was also a part of Les Bleus’ 2018 FIFA World Cup-winning campaign. But he has since struggled with injuries, losing his place as a regular as a result.

The 2021/22 season has been solid for the 27-year-old, even though he remains a backup option. Tolisso has two goals and three assists in 17 appearances across all competitions. But the player will leave Bayern Munich as a free agent in the summer, with his situation capturing the attention of Real Madrid and Chelsea.

The interest from Real Madrid stems from the uncertainties surrounding the futures of Isco and Dani Ceballos. The two Spanish midfielders have barely featured for Real Madrid this season due to various reasons and will likely depart the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer.

With Luka Modric in the twilight of his career, Real Madrid will need to sign a midfielder to share some of the workload, despite the presence of Eduardo Camavinga, Federico Valverde, Toni Kroos and Casemiro. But Real Madrid will have to fend off competition from Chelsea to sign the 27-year-old on a Bosman move in the summer.

Thomas Tuchel has several top-class midfielders at his disposal in N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek also impressing this term. In addition, Conor Gallagher is touted for a bright future at Chelsea, meaning it is somewhat surprising that Chelsea would want to sign a midfielder.

But the ongoing campaign has shown that Tuchel needs more midfielders at his disposal, with Tolisso emerging as a viable option to replace Saul Niguez. Recent reports have claimed that Tolisso is keen on joining Real Madrid, meaning Chelsea could have an uphill task convincing the French midfielder to move to Stamford Bridge instead.
