Manchester United and Manchester City will reportedly have to shell out a massive transfer fee of £150 million if they want to sign Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur.
According to a report from the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur have set a price tag of £150 million on star striker Harry Kane amid interest from both Manchester United and Manchester City.
A product of the Tottenham youth academy, Kane has developed into one of the most lethal centre-forwards in the game over the last half-a-decade or so. The 27-year-old England captain is the Lilywhites’ second-highest goalscorer of all time with 209 strikes to his name from 319 appearances.
A prolific marksman, Kane has also unleashed his playmaking abilities in the ongoing campaign, emerging as Tottenham’s MVP, bagging 21 goals and 14 assists from 32 games in all competitions. And even though, the north London giants’ title challenge has faltered of late, the England captain continues to go strong.
Kane’s exploits season after season have made him an attractive prospect for both Manchester United and Manchester City, who could be in for a new striker in the summer transfer window.
Indeed, Manchester United will need to bolster their attacking unit as Edinson Cavani is only a stop-gap solution while Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood have largely been used out wide, whereas, Anthony Martial has failed to build on his promising last season.
Manchester City, on the other hand, will need a long-term replacement for all-time leading goalscorer Sergio Aguero, who is out of contract at the end of the season and has struggled for fitness all throughout the current campaign. Gabriel Jesus, despite all his promise, hasn’t shown the prolific nature required to fill in Aguero’s boots, making Kane a viable target.
Tottenham have always maintained that Kane is not for sale. However, amid mounting financial pressures due to the pandemic coupled with the mortgage on their new stadium, the 27-year-old remains their biggest saleable asset. Chairman Daniel Levy, though, will not even enter into any discussions for an offer less than the £150 million mentioned.
Kane is contracted with Tottenham till the summer of 2024, meaning the ball is still firmly in their court. In addition, the financial difficulties brought about by the pandemic could hinder both the Manchester clubs from meeting the England captain’s valuation in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Apart from Kane, both Manchester United and Manchester City have also been linked with Borussia Dortmund’s goalscoring machine Erling Haaland as well recently. It remains to be seen if either of the two Mancunian outfits go after Kane in the summer transfer window or turn their focus to alternate targets.
