Everton have reportedly joined Arsenal and Manchester City in pursuit of Jonny Evans and are planning a January bid for the former Manchester United star.

According to ESPN, Everton is the latest club to show an interest in acquiring the services of West Bromwich Albion star Jonny Evans. The former Manchester United man is also a target for Arsenal and Manchester City, both of whom retain interest in the player from the summer transfer window.

The Toffees have recently filled up their managerial position with Premier League survival expert Sam Allardyce. And seeing as all of Big Sam’s squad often contains a defensive-minded leader, Jonny Evans is an ideal fit.

Not that Everton do not have leaders in their squad – Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka along with Wayne Rooney – but the addition of the 29-year-old could be one of the many possible remedies at Big Sam’s disposal in order to stop or soften the leaky defensive line.

The Toffees have already conceded a whopping 28 goals in just 15 Premier League games – a sign that there is something wrong defensively. Jonny Evans is a highly underrated star. The player was slowly becoming a regular under Sir Alex Ferguson before the legendary manager announced his retirement.

He further built upon his reputation at West Brom and looks set to be on the move soon. His contract is set to expire in the summer of 2019 and with complications surrounding his renewal talks with the club, it is indication enough.

Tony Pulis had responded to the interest shown in Evans towards the end of the summer transfer window by benching the former Manchester United for an extended period before welcoming him back into the first-team setup.

However, with Alan Pardew now at the helm, we could expect Baggies to change their stance on Evans. The new manager has already underlined the fact that he will not let any player leave mid-season without a fight and a fight is what seems to be brewing for the services of the 29-year-old.

Pardew might consider cashing in on Evans for the right amount though, in order to reinforce other areas come January. Manchester City had a few bids rejected for the Northern Irish star and are expected to return in January, as is Arsenal, who were heavily linked with the player.
