Manchester United are tracking AS Monaco left-back Benjamin Mendy for a move in the summer transfer window, as per reports.

French outlet Telefoot have reported that AS Monaco left-back Benjamin Mendy has found his way on the radar of Manchester United, with manager Jose Mourinho being an admirer of the Frenchman’s talents.

Mendy progressed rapidly through the ranks at Le Havre before making his debut for the senior side at the tender age of 17. He spent the initial years of his career with the French second division club before earning a move to Marseille in 2013.

He soon established himself in the first team setup with the French giants and spent three fruitful seasons with the club, amassing 81 Ligue 1 appearances in the process before joining their rivals AS Monaco this past summer.

The move to Monaco has seen Mendy make further progression in his career, as he played a key role in the Ligue 1 leaders’ rapid charge up to the top of the table.  Leonardo Jardim’s side have been the best attacking side in Europe, having netted 82 times in just 28 Ligue 1 games this season.

And Mendy’s bombing runs on the left flank have only added a further layer to Monaco’s multi-dimensional attack. The 22-year-old has played 27 games in competitions for Monaco and he has already provided nine assists so far.

Mendy’s stellar performances for Monaco have seen him being rated as one of the most exciting young stars in France, and he is now closer than ever before to breaking into the national setup. And while he might have gone under the radar of clubs who have focussed on Monaco’s attackers, he is certainly starting to get noticed now.

Mendy is believed to have caught the eye of Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, and the Portuguese is now monitoring the defender’s progress. Mourinho is said to be keen to add to his options at left-back in the summer to provide competition to Luke Shaw.

Shaw, himself, has been battling fitness issues all through the season and has struggled to break into the first team. In his absence, Marcos Rojo, Darmian and Daley Blind have all been deployed as left-back but none of the players have managed to make much of an impression on Mourinho.

Meanwhile, Shaw’s long absences from the first team picture have also put his Manchester United future under a cloud, leaving Mourinho in a precarious situation should the English defender choose to move away from Old Trafford in the summer.

That could see him turn towards Mendy with a concrete offer, with the 22-year-old fitting the profile of the kind of attacking full-back Mourinho likes in his team. It now remains to be seen how things develop in the coming months and if Manchester United indeed make a move for Mendy in the summer.
