Former Newcastle and Blackburn striker and renowned TV journalist Alan Shearer believes that Chelsea and Arsenal possess the spine which is lacking in Liverpool and Manchester City this season.

Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day programme, building up to the Chelsea vs West Brom game, Alan Shearer explained why he thinks that Chelsea and Arsenal are a grade ahead of the chasing pile in the league this season.

“The two teams with the best spine are sitting at the top of the league, Chelsea and Arsenal,” Shearer said, according to the Daily Mirror.

“And you look at Manchester City, they’ve brought in players to try and play a different way, with a goalkeeper, it’s not necessarily working.

“Liverpool certainly not settled at all. But the two settled sides with the two biggest spines are Chelsea and Arsenal and that’s why they’re sat at the top of the league at this moment in time,” he added.

Chelsea continued their winning run as they dispatched West Brom 1-0 at Stamford Bridge. Despite the Baggies showing great resilience, a late goal from Diego Costa snatch the victory and add a valuable three points to their kitty. This game was a must win for Chelsea as Arsenal had overtaken them at the top of the table a day earlier. A tidy performance from the Gunners saw them run out 3-1 winners against Stoke City and momentarily claim top honours in the league.

Arsene Wenger’s side extended their unbeaten run to 14 games and along with Chelsea, look like the most consistent side in the league. Liverpool and Manchester City began the season strongly, but their recent performances have seen the two London clubs make up considerable ground over them.

The Citizens have won just two of their last five games and are now in a bit of a bother as they find themselves sitting in fourth place and a staggering seven points off leaders Chelsea. Liverpool too, post the injury to Philippe Coutinho have struggled to find consistency and have picked up just one point from a possible six in the absence of the Brazilian lynchpin.
