Manchester United are exploring options as speculation over Michael Carrick’s future intensifies, with Unai Emery the latest on their list.
According to Spanish news site Fichajes, Manchester United are identifying potential replacements for Carrick following a torrid run of results, with Emery the latest manager to be linked with the position. The Spanish coach has enjoyed considerable success at Aston Villa, and the Red Devils could make a move for him if they decide to make a sudden change in the dugout.
The pressure is mounting on Carrick to turn things around at Old Trafford following back-to-back home defeats. The criticism of Manchester United’s performances against Manchester City and Brighton & Hove Albion has created tension behind the scenes, potentially increasing the possibility of Carrick leaving prematurely.
Although reports have stated that Manchester United are not planning to sack Carrick at this stage, a position also reported by Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic, circumstances could change suddenly in the near future. Several media reports have already linked the club with potential replacements for the under-fire manager, and Emery is the latest name to be added to that list.
Will Manchester United target Unai Emery?
Emery’s name has previously been mentioned in connection with Manchester United, who are believed to be impressed by his work at Aston Villa. The former Arsenal manager has consistently kept the Birmingham club competitive despite financial limitations. His most significant achievement came last season, when he led Villa to the Europa League title.
The experience Emery brings is something Manchester United may seek in their next manager, particularly if the club decides to end the Carrick experiment soon. However, there would be significant obstacles to taking the 54-year-old Spaniard away from Aston Villa, where he is under contract until the summer of 2029.
More importantly, Emery does not have the strongest record when managing major clubs such as Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain. However, he performed considerably better with teams such as Villarreal, Sevilla, and Aston Villa.
The Spanish tactician is reportedly one of the key names on Manchester United’s list should Carrick leave his position, but only time will tell whether Emery is considered a serious target.
Antonio Conte was also reportedly linked with the club recently. Given Manchester United’s desire to climb the English football hierarchy immediately, the Italian would make sense because of his impressive track record. However, from a long-term perspective, Conte may not be the ideal option, which is where a younger manager such as Emery could be viewed as a more sensible target.
