Manchester United are reportedly keeping tabs on Antonio Conte as doubts emerge over Michael Carrick’s future at Old Trafford.
Antonio Conte has begun considering a return to management, with Corriere della Sera, via Sport Witness, linking the Italian with Manchester United. Growing doubts have emerged over Carrick’s position following a difficult start to the new season, and the club could make an early decision regarding the Englishman’s future.
The prospect of change has begun to emerge at Old Trafford following Manchester United’s poor performance in Sunday’s Manchester Derby. Carrick faced considerable criticism after his team struggled against a ten-man Manchester City side and failed to take advantage of the situation following Phil Foden’s red card.
Instead, Erling Haaland’s controversial second-half goal was enough to secure three points for the visitors, placing further pressure on Carrick. There have been suggestions that the club are already considering whether to make a change in the dugout, which could see their newly appointed permanent manager depart.
Carrick took charge of a disjointed team following Ruben Amorim’s departure last season. He helped Manchester United finish third in the league and earned the permanent role at Old Trafford. However, things have not gone according to plan, with Manchester United winning just one of their first four Premier League matches.
Will Antonio Conte join Manchester United?
Italian media reports have raised the possibility that Manchester United could consider Conte as a potential replacement for Carrick if the team’s poor run continues. Conte left Napoli in the summer after two seasons in charge and a Serie A title, and he is currently open to new opportunities.
He was reportedly linked with Real Madrid before Jose Mourinho’s appointment, while there have also been loose links with several Premier League clubs, including his former team Chelsea. Juventus are also believed to be monitoring his situation.
Conte may welcome approaches from clubs seeking a new project, provided their ambitions and plans align with his own. Manchester United were linked with Conte several years ago but did not appoint him at the time. However, circumstances may have changed, potentially reigniting the club’s interest.
Realistically, the links between Conte and Manchester United appear premature at this stage. The club are still expected to support Carrick and allow him to turn the situation around in the foreseeable future.
