Tottenham told to sign a quality striker to “smash the ceiling”

Tim Sherwood has urged Tottenham to prioritise signing an elite striker, arguing a proven goalscorer could lift the club to compete with the Premier League’s top sides.

Sherwood believes Spurs need a player capable of making a major difference in the final third and has suggested that bringing in a quality forward would allow the team to “smash the ceiling”.

The north London club have undergone significant changes in recent times, with Roberto De Zerbi taking charge and looking to implement his attacking philosophy at Spurs. The Italian coach has built a reputation for possession-based, aggressive football and is expected to demand more quality from his squad as Tottenham look to move forward. While Spurs possess talented attacking options, Sherwood feels they require a genuine match-winner up front who can consistently deliver goals at the highest level.

Tottenham have lacked a clinical finisher since Harry Kane’s departure, with the club searching for a long-term successor capable of leading the attack. Sherwood believes that adding such a player could completely transform Tottenham’s ambitions. The former Spurs boss highlighted the importance of having a forward who can turn close games into victories and provide the decisive moments required to challenge for major honours.

Under De Zerbi, Spurs are expected to focus on improving their attacking output. De Zerbi’s Brighton sides prioritised possession and chance creation, but having a clinical finisher could prove crucial to converting creativity into consistent results.

He said via TEAMtalk: “Do they need a striker? Well, perhaps he might kick-start Dominic Solan;e, you just don’t know. You’ve got Richarlison as well. Whatever people think about Richarlison, he scored 11 goals in a really poor Tottenham team and helped them stay in the Premier League.

“I’m not saying he’s the answer, but I was crying out for him to play because I’ve seen him do it in that environment for Everton before and keep them in the league. I think he was a player who really stood up. I do think he might be moved on now, though.

“If there’s another striker out there, I will trust De Zerbi to go out there and find him, and he might be someone from left field. He’s shown that he likes the Danny Welbeck’s – a big nine, someone that holds the ball up. João Pedro was at Brighton; it will be someone with credentials like that.

“Solanke might be the answer, though you don’t know…”

Can Spurs add more goals this summer?

For Sherwood, simply signing another promising attacker may not be enough. He believes Tottenham need a prolific finisher capable of converting Spurs’ creation into consistent goals — a player with the mentality and ability to become the focal point of the team.

Tottenham have often been praised for their talented squad and potential, but converting that promise into trophies has remained difficult. Sherwood’s argument is that a world-class striker could provide the final ingredient needed to bridge the gap between being competitive and becoming genuine contenders. With De Zerbi now looking to build a team capable of competing at the top level, Tottenham’s recruitment decisions in the coming transfer windows will be crucial.
