Liverpool legend John Arne Riise believes the Reds should make Bradley Barcola one of their top transfer priorities this summer.
John Arne Riise believes Bradley Barcola possesses the kind of game-changing quality that can lift both the team and the supporters at Anfield. He also urged the club to reinforce the midfield with greater physicality as a new era begins under manager Andoni Iraola.
The former left-back, who enjoyed seven successful years at Anfield, feels Liverpool need more than just replacements for departing stars. In his view, the squad requires players capable of transforming matches through individual brilliance, and Barcola fits that profile perfectly.
Riise was particularly impressed by Barcola’s performances on the international stage, highlighting the winger’s pace, confidence and unpredictability. According to the Norwegian, Liverpool have lacked a player who can consistently unsettle defenders and inject excitement into games, especially when matches become tight. He believes supporters thrive on players who can create something out of nothing.
“I was actually just about to name Barcola. I really like Bradley Barcola and think he has had a brilliant World Cup with France,” the Norwegian said via TEAMtalk, before adding, “Liverpool need an attacker or a winger who possesses that raw, unpredictable X-factor – someone who gives the Anfield crowd that immediate lift.
“It’s like when young Rio Ngumoha comes on; you can instantly feel the energy in the stadium shift because the fans know something exciting is about to happen. I want Liverpool to target that exact profile – a player who can step up and change the entire dynamic of a match.”
Liverpool are entering an important transition after a disappointing campaign that ended in fifth place. Iraola has been appointed to oversee the rebuild, with expectations that his high-energy, pressing philosophy will reshape the team’s identity. His philosophy demands attackers capable of both creating and transitioning quickly, a profile Barcola fulfils.
The former Norway international also identified midfield as another area requiring urgent attention. In Riise’s view, Liverpool possesses technical midfield quality but lacks the physicality to dominate possession during high-intensity matches. Iraola’s system relies on midfield control in transition; opponents frequently bypassed Liverpool’s possession-dominant approach through physical pressures.

Whether Liverpool ultimately make a move for Barcola remains to be seen, but Riise has made his opinion clear. He believes the French international has the flair, directness and match-winning ability required to excite the Anfield crowd and become a cornerstone of Liverpool’s next chapter.
