Manchester City unwilling to pay £80-100 million to sign Elliot Anderson

Manchester City will not pay £80-100 million to sign 23-year-old English international Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest in the winter transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Elliot Anderson is the subject of interest from Manchester City. The Citizens are keen on reinforcing their first-team squad by signing a versatile midfielder in the winter transfer window. So, the 23-year-old Nottingham Forest mainstay has emerged as a target.

However, a January move may not materialise, as the Premier League bigwigs have no interest in paying £80-100 million to secure the Englishman’s services in the winter transfer window. Meanwhile, Anderson is also a target for Manchester United. However, a deal will likely see the light of day next summer.

The story of Elliot Anderson’s meteoric rise

Elliot Anderson has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League since joining Nottingham Forest from Newcastle United in a deal worth £35 million last year. The 23-year-old spent his formative years in his homeland and graduated from the youth division at Newcastle United.

However, Newcastle United’s struggles on the PSR front forced the Tyneside outfit to sell Anderson to Nottingham Forest. Anderson has made over 50 appearances for Nottingham Forest thus far while chipping in with three goals and seven assists. Meanwhile, the youngster’s progress has piqued the attention of several high-profile clubs, including Manchester United and Manchester City.

Move across the Premier League on the cards?

Manchester United’s interest in Elliot Anderson is understandable. The Red Devils are eager to sign a holding midfielder next year after failing to secure Carlos Baleba’s services in the summer transfer window. With Casemiro approaching the twilight of his career and Manuel Ugarte failing to make his mark since arriving from Paris Saint-Germain, they need a defensive midfielder. So, Anderson is a viable target for Manchester United.

As for Manchester City, Rodri’s long-term future is uncertain, and the Spanish international has struggled with fitness issues in the last 18 months. So, Manchester City will begin the succession plan for Rodri, with Anderson emerging as a top target. However, Nottingham Forest’s asking price of £80-100 million is prohibitive heading into the winter transfer window.

The Citizens have no interest in meeting Nottingham Forest’s valuation, and they will not pay £80-100 million to sign the 23-year-old Englishman in the winter transfer window. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Anderson.
