Aston Villa keen on re-signing Carney Chukwuemeka

Aston Villa will reportedly look to re-sign 21-year-old English midfield whizkid Carney Chukwuemeka from Chelsea in the winter transfer window.

According to a report by Football Insider, Carney Chukwuemeka is the subject of interest from Aston Villa. The Villans have been scouring the market for a versatile midfielder heading into the winter transfer window. So, the rarely-used Chelsea whizkid has emerged as a target, although the West London club’s asking price of £40 million poses a problem for the West Midlands outfit.

Carney Chukwuemeka and his Chelsea woes

Carney Chukwuemeka has seen his progress come to a stuttering halt since joining Chelsea from Aston Villa in August 2022. The Englishman arrived at Stamford Bridge amid hype and fanfare surrounding him. However, fitness issues and intense competition for places have meant that the youngster has struggled for game time in the last 30 months.

Enzo Maresca was ready to sanction Chukwuemeka’s departure in the summer transfer window before the move failed to see the light of day. However, that has not meant good news for the 21-year-old, who has managed only 130 minutes of game time across five appearances in all competitions thus far this term.

Meanwhile, Chukwuemeka’s stock in the market remains high, with several well-known clubs across Europe vying for his signature. However, a move across the Premier League might be on the cards for the English midfield whizkid despite his recent links with AC Milan, Celtic, and Rangers.

Homecoming on the cards?

Aston Villa’s interest in Carney Chukwuemeka is perplexing. The Villans have a stacked midfield unit, especially with Boubacar Kamara gradually rising in stature after returning from a long-term knee injury-enforced layoff. With the Aston Villa midfield unit also having Amadou Onana, Youri Tielemans, John McGinn, and Ross Barkley, it is unclear how the Chelsea outcast might fit into the scheme of things.

Nevertheless, Aston Villa might look to re-sign the English midfield whizkid in the winter transfer window. However, Chelsea’s asking price might complicate matters for the West Midlands outfit, with the Blues demanding around £40 million to part ways with him.

The report has claimed that the Villans do not want to cough up £40 million to re-sign the 21-year-old Englishman, although he remains a “concrete January target”. It will be interesting to see if Chelsea or Aston Villa will compromise amid the demand for a transfer fee of £40 million.
