West Ham United nearly landed Cole Palmer before Chelsea swoop

West Ham United were reportedly very close to landing Cole Palmer from Manchester City before Chelsea swooped in late in the summer.

According to The Sun, West Ham United were very close to landing Cole Palmer in the summer. Chelsea were swift in their dealings with Manchester City and made a quick move for the attacker in the last moment, which may have left David Moyes rescuing the club’s efficiency in the deal.

West Ham United missed out on Cole Palmer

The transfer market has many facets, with some essential parts always missing the media lenses. So, stories about what went on in the background come out later. Many instances emerge much later, and there is a story about West Ham United’s pursuit of Cole Palmer.

Palmer has been a revelation for Chelsea since moving in a £40 million deal in the summer from Manchester City. Pep Guardiola rated him quite highly but had to reluctantly let him go because the player demanded ample game time in the current season, something the Catalan could not promise.

Chelsea swooped him, but they only did so late in the window, as the £40 million attacker was the subject of being close to signing for West Ham United. The Hammers reportedly made enquiries and had been evaluating the costs involved in such a deal before the Blues swooped for him at the last moment.

David Moyes might have come to rue the situation as he will have watched how the Englishman has flourished this season. West Ham did not leave the market empty-handed as they landed Mohammed Kudus as their new right winger, which, in hindsight, has been as important a signing as Palmer has been for Chelsea.

Chelsea to hand Palmer a new contract?

There have been contrasting reports about what Chelsea might do in the upcoming summer. The Blues are on the edge of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, which has pointed towards the possibility of selling some of their critical stars, including Palmer.

Chelsea plan to hand Palmer a new deal, which makes complete sense, considering his importance to them. The Englishman has scored 20 league goals this season, as the hat-trick against Everton last week let him go level with Manchester City’s Erling Haaland in the race for the Golden Boot.
