Everton open contract talks with Tottenham target Ben Godfrey

Everton and Ben Godfrey are reportedly in talks over a new contract, handing a blow to Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of signing him.

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Ben Godfrey is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The North London giants have been hoping to land the Everton defender in the January transfer window. But the Toffees have opened talks over a new contract with the Englishman, dealing a blow to Tottenham.

Ben Godfrey and His Frustrations at Everton

Ben Godfrey was once among the most highly-rated centre-backs in England. The 25-year-old’s stock was high during his four-year stint with Norwich City. So, Everton seemed to have struck a coup when they signed him in a deal worth £20 million in October 2020.

But the English defender has blown hot and cold in the last three years at Goodison Park. Things have gone from bad to worse in the 2023/24 season, as Godfrey has managed only 181 minutes of game time across three appearances thus far this term. In addition, he will enter the final 18 months of his contract in January.

Godfrey’s contract situation has captured the attention of fellow Premier League clubs, with Tottenham Hotspur, in particular, keen on signing him. They have been hoping to secure his services in the January transfer window.

Tottenham Calling?

The North London giants are in the market for a centre-back heading into the January transfer window. Tottenham suffered in the absence of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven in the last few weeks, exposing the need for a centre-back. So, it is hardly surprising that they want to sign a central defender next month.

Several players have thus emerged on Tottenham’s radar, with Ben Godfrey being a top target. Reports this month have also suggested that Everton had been ready to cash in on the Englishman. But the update by TEAMtalk contradicts those claims, revealing that the Toffees are in talks with the 25-year-old over a new contract.

Everton’s negotiations with Godfrey come as a blow for Tottenham. But with the English centre-back not getting much game time at Goodison Park, it might be worth his time to leave Everton and embark on a new adventure at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
