Everton defender Ben Godfrey has been linked with the move away from the club and Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen on him.

A report from Football Insider claimed that the Toffees were not prepared to sell him in January initially, but the defender could now join Spurs if there is a lucrative proposal on the table.

The 25-year-old defender has struggled for regular game time at Everton and he needs to play regularly at this stage of his career. A move to Tottenham could be an exciting opportunity for him and Everton are now prepared to let the player leave.

The 25-year-old was regarded as one of the finest young defensive talents in the country before he joined Everton. The defender attracted the attention of Tottenham with his performances. He has been linked with a move to Spurs in recent weeks. It will be interesting to see if Tottenham can secure an agreement with Everton now.

The Toffees are currently involved in the relegation battle and they will want to keep their best players so that they can complete survival. Meanwhile, Tottenham need to bring in alternatives to players like Eric Dier and Micky Van de Ven. While the Dutch defender is sidelined with an injury, Dier has been linked with an exit from the club during the January transfer window.

The versatile Tottenham defender has fallen down the pecking order at the North London club and it would make sense for him to leave in search of regular playing time.

Tottenham are already lacking in depth in the defensive department and it remains to be seen whether they are prepared to sanction the departure of Dier without bringing in a quality alternative. Tottenham have started the season well and they will want to secure Champions League qualification. Signing a quality, central defender in January could prove to be a wise decision for them.

Regular football at Tottenham could help the Everton defender get back to his best once again and get his career back on track. Ange Postecoglou might be able to get the best out of him in the coming months. He did well to nurture talented young players at Celtic.
