Brennan Johnson set to join Tottenham

Tottenham have agreed a £47.5 million fee with Nottingham for versatile 22-year-old forward Brennan Johnson.

David Ornstein of The Athletic has confirmed the news about Tottenham finding a breakthrough in negotiations with Nottingham Forest for Brennan Johnson. Spurs have now agreed a £47.5 million fixed fee for the Welshman, who will land in London for his medicals.

Tottenham have been active on the last day of the transfer window, as some expected the club to make at least one headline signing. Spurs have been in the market for a new midfielder and attacker, although a centre-back could also become a need.

Earlier today, they were linked with Conor Gallagher and might make a late bid for the Chelsea midfielder. In addition, Tottenham were expected to remain in the hunt for Brennan Johnson, who had emerged as their top attacking talent in the last few weeks.

So far, Nottingham Forest’s demands were proving tricky for the North Londoners, who had never lodged an offer. However, as per David Ornstein of The Athletic and other sources, Tottenham has agreed on a fee with Forest for the versatile 22-year-old Welshman.

The fee for Johnson is £47.5 million fixed with no add-ons, which will have come closer to Nottingham Forest’s original demand of £50 million. The deal also includes a 10% sell-on clause in case Tottenham decide to trade the forward in the future.

The Midlands club had FFP issues, which may have forced their hand to sell the versatile 22-year-old, who garnered high-profile interest from Spurs and Chelsea earlier.

As the window approached its latter stages, Tottenham opened direct talks with Forest to find an agreement. The Midlands club had earlier rejected a bid close to £43 million from Brentford for the Welshman, and now he will join Spurs.

Johnson was reportedly in London already in anticipation of a deal being agreed, and he will now travel to Tottenham to complete his medicals and finalise the move. Ange Postecoglou considered Johnson his top attacking target and wanted another player in the final third.

With Johnson’s and a potential move for Gallagher also on the cards, Tottenham could finish the transfer window as one of its top contenders. They have made some notable signings like Micky van de Ven and James Maddison while ensuring loan deals for Dejan Kulusevski and Pedro Porro were permanent.
