Manchester United want £50 million to sell Harry Maguire

Manchester United value Harry Maguire at £50 million in the current window, which may result in clubs baulking at the price.

Manchester Evening News says Manchester United want £50 million to sell Harry Maguire this summer. No club will show eagerness to pay that fee, considering how much farther the 30-year-old has fallen down the pecking order under Erik ten Hag.

Eyebrows were raised when Manchester United paid a world record sum of £80 million for a central defender when signing Harry Maguire from Leicester City. That is certainly the price to sign an established England international. And despite his ups and downs at Old Trafford, the 30-year-old has maintained his status with the England national team.

Manchester United consider his international status and are now asking for a £50 million fee to part ways with their captain. Such an idea could kill off the idea of selling the 57-cap England international, as his reported £200,000-a-week wages could also pose an issue for suitors.

At Manchester United, Maguire lost his status as a starter only two games into last season. Erik ten Hag visibly prefers to play a right and left-footed centre-back combination, with Lisandro Martinez replacing the 30-year-old star.

There were reports about Maguire planning on holding talks with the club early on. But no progress has been made in that aspect. Those conversations may happen during pre-season as both parties want a resolution before the campaign begins a month later.

Maguire would likely want a stay at the club, despite some glances from other sides, including Tottenham. The north Londoners have since shifted their focus to other, younger targets, but others might show an interest in the 57-cap international.

Manchester United’s £50 million asking price shows they are keen to sell Maguire. But no club will likely pay a fee close to their demands. Teams might consider making an approach at a much lower fee, but the chances seem slim.

Manchester United are desperate to raise funds through player sales, and their valuation of Maguire shows they consider him one of their prized assets. Ten Hag barely used the defender in games he could have otherwise played, contrasting their asking price.

They are keen to sign Andre Onana and a new striker, which will cost them a huge sum in this window. In the scenario Manchester United manages to sell Maguire, they will have to find a quality replacement considering his exit will leave them short at the back heading into the new season.
