Barcelona considering part-exchange deal to sign Oriol Romeu

Barcelona might offer a player in the deal to sign 31-year-old Spanish midfielder Oriol Romeu from La Liga club Girona.

According to Spanish journalist Adrian Sanchez, Oriol is becoming a top target for Barcelona heading into the summer transfer window. And the Catalan giants are considering offering a player in the deal to sign the 31-year-old midfielder from fellow La Liga club Girona.

Oriol Romeu has found a second wind in his professional career since joining La Liga club Girona. The Spaniard had enjoyed a decent seven-year stint with Southampton before falling in stature in his final season. But he was one of the most underrated midfielders in La Liga this past season.

The 31-year-old took little time to become a regular for Girona, even scoring twice in La Liga. Romeu made 34 appearances across all competitions for the Catalan club in the 2022/23 season. And the experienced midfielder’s performances have captured the attention of Barcelona heading into the summer transfer window.

Sergio Busquets has left Barcelona this summer, joining Inter Milan for the final phase of his glittering career. And while the Catalan giants have signed Ilkay Gundogan on a free transfer, they might need another midfield reinforcement. Barcelona’s situation might also exacerbate if Franck Kessie departs in the summer transfer window.

Either way, Barcelona can do with a new defensive-minded midfielder in the first-team squad. That is because Frenkie de Jong is not a natural holding midfielder, even though he played at the base of the midfield unit in a few games last season. Oriol Romeu has thus emerged as a viable target for Barcelona.

The report by Adrian Sanchez claims the 31-year-old has become a top target for Barcelona this summer. Meanwhile, the newly-crowned La Liga champions are considering a part-exchange deal to sign the Spanish midfielder. But it is unclear if Girona will accept such a proposal if they receive a bid.

Pursuing Romeu to replace Busquets in the short term is understandable. And it will be interesting to see if Barcelona can get a part-exchange deal over the line for the 31-year-old Girona midfielder this summer.
