Chelsea are keeping tabs on the situation of Julian Nagelsmann and could make an offer if they lose faith in Graham Potter.
According to Football Insider, Julian Nagelsmann is a target for Chelsea in the summer. The Stamford Bridge outfit could swoop in for the German manager if they lose faith in Graham Potter. The 35-year-old is Tottenham’s priority managerial target, but the Blues could crush their hopes with a move.
The Julian Nagelsmann situation has had ramifications in England as some of the top London clubs are keen on recruiting the beleaguered 35-year-old. Having been sacked by Bayern Munich suddenly, the German finds himself without a job but with plenty of admirers from the Premier League.
In a strange week at Bayern Munich, they decided to abruptly sack Nagelsmann and appoint Thomas Tuchel as his successor. The decision to dismiss the 35-year-old has caused many to think about what may have been the reason behind it.
Nagelsmann had won each Champions League game and taken Bayern to the quarter-finals against Manchester City. Bayern are also one point behind Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga table, and they face each other after the international break.
Julian Nagelsmann’s record as Bayern coach:
84 games: 60 W, 14 D, 10 L
71.4% win percentage
1 Bundesliga title
2 German Super Cups
8/8 wins in UCL this season— B/R Football (@brfootball) March 24, 2023
Despite the huge outlay in acquiring him from Leipzig and the subsequent offer of a long-term deal, Bayern have to pay hefty compensation for the 35-year-old. Meanwhile, their decision has caused some London clubs to consider the situation and ponder appointing Nagelsmann. There’s also the reported interest of Real Madrid in the tactician.
However, Tottenham were the first to be linked with a move for Nagelsmann. According to reports, the 35-year-old has become their priority managerial target, with Antonio Conte set for the sack imminently. The German’s availability has alerted the possibility of an appointment. But Spurs seemingly want a deal done fast.
As feared by many, Spurs have to face competition from Chelsea, who are reportedly keeping tabs on Nagelsmann’s situation. They feel the German is the ideal candidate to replace Graham Potter if they sack the Englishman at the end of the season.
Potter endured a difficult start to life after becoming Chelsea’s boss. Despite some resurgence in recent weeks in the Premier League, the former Brighton man has not been able to improve their league position. Chelsea are in real danger of finishing outside of European places. Alternatively, they could qualify for the Europa League spots or even the Conference League, but that will not be ideal.
Hence, Chelsea could decide to sack Potter if results continue to falter between now and the end of May. In that scenario, they may want Tottenham’s priority managerial target Nagelsmann to take over the reins. If the Blues come in for the German, Spurs will have to worry about the chances of appointing the 35-year-old.
