Transfer News: Chelsea turn to Javier Hernandez after disappointment in Romelu Lukaku pursuit

Chelsea are reportedly eyeing a shock deal for Bayer Leverkusen striker Javier Hernandez after Manchester United hijacked their pursuit of Romelu Lukaku.

According to The Sun, Chelsea have shifted their attention to a former Manchester United striker after being handed defeat in the pursuit of Everton superstar Romelu Lukaku by the Red Devils. Antonio Conte is now eyeing a deal to bring Bayer Leverkusen striker Javier Hernandez back to the Premier League.

While Chelsea have failed in the pursuit of Romelu Lukaku, they still need a striker, with Diego Costa and Antonio Conte still at loggerheads and the Spaniard set for a summer exit from the club, which has forced them to look towards the Mexican, who is affectionately nicknamed Little Pea by his countrymen.

Javier Hernandez shot up to limelight after a low-money move to Manchester United – a move that proved to be a bargain deal as the Mexican returned the transfer fees in massive premium in his first season itself, with the striker pumping in 20 goals for the club.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure from the club saw the player’s role and importance diminish at Old Trafford. The Mexican was sent out on loan to Real Madrid before he finally departed from the club on a permanent basis as Bayer Leverkusen snapped up the opportunity to secure the player’s services.

At the Bay Arena as well, the 29-year-old started well, with 26 goals in his maiden Bundesliga season. However, the second season has been average by stretch as he finished the season with 13 goals, with a massive dry run in mid-season.

His abilities, though, are never in doubt, something that saw the player being linked with a return to the Premier League in the summer – the player was linked to the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham among others while West Ham have now emerged as another suitor for the 29-year-old.

Javier Hernandez has similar Premier League experience to Romelu Lukaku and the Mexican’s off-the-ball movement and poaching ability will surely add another weapon in Chelsea’s arsenal. The player is also believed to be available for just £13.5 million – a deal that may prove to be a bargain.

Hernandez seem to be closing in on a return to the Premier League, with West Ham seriously interested in the player. However, Chelsea may swoop in for the player in a deal that may come as a shock to the United fan base.
