Former Italy Captain Fabio Cannavaro Sentenced To 10-Months Imprisonment

Fabio Cannavaro, who won the 2006 World Cup with Italy, has been hand a 10-month jail sentence for breaching orders to keep out of his property after it was seized by authorities.

Former Parma, Inter Milan, Juventus and Real Madrid defender, Fabio Cannavaro, who is now coach of Chinese league side Guangzhou Evergrande, has been undergoing investigation for tax invasion. According to reports, the Italiana s villa has been confiscated for suspected abuse of building regulations, involving failing to secure planning permission from the local council to carry out works to the house, the garden and pool.

Fabio Cannavaro, his wife Daniela Arenoso, and his brother Paolo, who plays in Serie A for Sassuolo, were acquitted over the planning permission allegations, but convicted for breaking a police seal and entering a property illegally. It is reported that the three were caught swimming in the swimming pool of the said property. All three have been handed a 10-month jail sentence for the same.

Cannavaro, along with his brother and wife, have appealed and will therefore have their sentences suspended until a final judgment is made.

It has been reported that Cannavaroa s company Fd Serviceowes over A?750,000 in unpaid taxes. The Italian Agency of Revenue has reportedly claimed that FD Service underpaid on Corporation Tax, Regional Tax and VAT between 2005-10.

In October, authorities in Naplesseized almost A?730,000 of goods linked to former world player of the year Cannavaro, 41, and his wife, as well as a a 180,000 yacht.

Fabio Cannavaro, who is considered one of the greatest defenders of his time, has enjoyed a rather illustrious career, playing for Parma, Inter Milan, Juventus and Real Madrid before retiring in 2011. Cannavaro was the captain of the 2006 World Cup winning squad of Italy and also won the Balon da Or in the very same year. He became only the third defender to win the coveted Balon da Or award after the likes of Franz Beckenbauer and Matthias Sammer.

In a career spanning close to a couple of decades, the defender won the Serie A, La Liga, UEFA Cup along with several other trophies. The highlight of his career, however, was when he led Italy to World Cup glory and then won the Balon da Or in the same year. He was also awarded the 2006 FIFA World Cup Silver Ball Award.

The prison sentence handed to Cannavaro comes as a shock mainly for a the reason the Italian may have to serve the sentence is not that grave.
