Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino admits the team need to change its mentality after the shock 2-1 home defeat against Stoke City.
First half goals from Bojan Krkic and Jon Walters helped Stoke City beat Tottenham Hotspurs in their own backyard. Nacer Chadliai??i??s superb volley in the 78th minute did reduce the deficit but it was of no use as Spurs went on to lose the game, their fourth of last five home defeats. Spurs manager, Pochettino recruited from Southampton in the summer, claimed that he will need time to implement his methods but agreed that the team need to improve sooner rather than later.
“It’s clear from the results that we need to improve, we need to improve a lot,” Pochettino said.
“It’s another defeat and we need to improve, this is clear to see. In football you always need time to implement different methods but we need to improve quickly because you never have a long time in football.
“You need to get results and we need to find a solution quickly. My challengeAi??in the next few weeks is to change the mentality and to find that solution.ai???
After impressive performances from Harry Kane lately, Spurs gave him his first Premier League start of the season. The first good chance of the game came for Harry Kane with just two minutes on the clock as the striker forced a good save out of Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic with a header.
However, it was Stoke City who broke the deadlock and took the early lead just six minutes into the game after a great move from Bojan Krkic to score the goal. Stoke were forced to make an early substitution as Phil Bradsley lasted just nine minutes, with the injured full-back replaced by Geoff Cameron. Stoke had to make their second change as Mark Wilson hobbled off on 25 minutes and was replaced by Marc Muniesa. Despite using 2 of the 3 substitutions in the first 25 minutes, Stoke were not backing down and doubled their advantage within 10 minutes of the change. The second goal was scored by Diouf after the striker received a ball headed towards by Ryan Shawcross following a Danny Rose clearance.
Spurs were getting increasingly frustrated as the time passed on and they failed to get anything out of the game. A series of rough tackles followed resulting in a yellow card for captain Younes Kaboul. Erik Lamelaai??i??s exquisite free-kick was one of the final opportunities for Spurs to get back into the game but the fingertips of Begovic helped Stoke keep Spurs at bay. Tottenhamai??i??s efforts were rewarded later on Chadli volleyed powerfully past Begovic from a tight angle.
However, Spurs could do nothing to get back into the game and were forced to accept the home defeat. After the game, Spurs boss Pochettino claimed the team felt the pressure after conceding the first goal and were not comfortable in possession.
“When we conceded the first goal, we felt the pressure.ai??? He said.
“It’s true that when we conceded the goal we started to take rash decisionsAi??and felt uncomfortable in possession.
“We conceded a goal after six minutes and then the team needed a lot of timeAi??to recover the performance. This is what we need to change.”
The result sees Stoke move ahead of Tottenham to 9th place in the Premier League, while Pochettinoai??i??s men themselves struggling in the bottom half placed 12th, a point behind Sunday’s opponents.
