Liverpool FC began the season hoping to get back into the Champions League, but wound up in disappointment after missing out on their finest opportunity in years.
Liverpool began the 2013-14 season having completed a one season long transition under manager Brendan Rodgers, with the aim of challenging for a place in the Top 4, and a return to the UEFA Champions League. The Reds exceeded expectations by far, and the fact that supporters and players were devastated on Championship Sunday means that the season was an overwhelming success.
Over the last 5 years, Liverpool FC have learnt, the hard way, that failure to qualify for the Champions League even once can have a detrimental effect that lasts for more than 12 months. European football is currently the gateway to financial riches: it helps in attracting players who want to test themselves against the best, and gives supporters an additional reason to look forward to a new season of football. Like it or not, it has driven the Liverpool manager’s stated aim throughout the season – to get into the Top 4 and consolidate their place in Europe’s top table.
Despite the grandeur associated with European nights at Anfield, however, the Premier League is the “bread and butter”. Given that in the quest for riches and glory in Europe, performances in the Premier League are the only ones that count. Liverpool have not just achieved their objective, the disappointment shown by players and supporters alike at the loss of their finest chance in years to win a Premier League title is evidence of the stunning progress that Liverpool have made this season.
Expectations v/s Reality
Let’s face it, Liverpool were nobody’s favourites at the start of the season to even finish in the Top 4, let alone mount a sustained challenge for the Premier League title. TheHardTackle also had Liverpool slated for a 5th or 6th place finish, but ever since Simon Mignolet’s last minute penalty save that confirmed 3 points for Liverpool on the opening day for the first time in five seasons, Liverpool were on track to achieving their aim. Fourth place, though, would still require Liverpool to play a qualifying fixture to confirm their place in the UEFA Champions League; so confirming a place in the Top 3 with two games to spare is a fantastic achievement for a team that began the season in such a weak position.
To say that this was Liverpool’s finest opportunity in years to win the Premier League title is to ignore the fact that the opportunity is there every year; but what made this season different is that Liverpool made their chances real with the performances they put out on a consistent basis, especially after Christmas.Ai??That being said, the Reds had no business not taking full advantage of a six-point lead over Manchester City they held as of the last week of April. History books will not tell you how much progress Liverpool made during the season, they only tell you where Liverpool finish. A fantastic season is not made null and void by a disappointing finish, but the progress made this season will count for nothing if Liverpool do not learn from the mistakes they made.
The keys to a great season
The League season may have begun in August, but the work done to take Liverpool to the top began when, on May 31, Luis Suarez claimed that the media intrusion into his life made him want to leave Liverpool. What happened thereafter, for the rest of the summer, is public knowledge; and it illustrated the size of the task Liverpool had on their hands. It required a show of defiance on the part of majority owner John W Henry, a great piece of man management from Brendan Rodgers, and professionalism on the part of Luis Suarez throughout the season. Keeping and reintegrating your best player is not easy, and does not always pay off; but this time it did, in a big way. The Uruguayan may simply be rewarded for the goals that he scored, but his creativity (illustrated by 12 assists for the season), work rate, and his working closely with young players like Raheem Sterling to bring out the best in them is a big reason why Liverpool were so successful.
Suarez may have scored a whopping 31 goals this season, but the remaining 70 goals that Liverpool registered for the season had to come from somewhere. That is a direct result of the improvement shown by players who were already at the club. Jordan Henderson turned from being offered to a club that got relegated this season to a player who was sorely missed during the title run-in. Luis Suarez’s goals would not have been enough if he wasn’t ably supported by Daniel Sturridge. Raheem Sterling’s sudden transformation after Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat at Hull City armed Liverpool with a constant threat from wide areas; while Jon Flanagan was the forgotten Academy graduate who, within six months, is one injury away from wearing an England jersey at the World Cup.
Brendan Rodgers may have been accused of lacking a Plan B when he first joined Liverpool, but flexibility in terms of formations and tactics was a common feature throughout the season. It did help that the core group of 13-15 players that played on a regular basis bought into his methods and performed their roles as well as they could. This flexibility has helped Rodgers derive the maximum results from the resources he had at any given point of time, and has prepared players to be able to deal with whatever is thrown at them in Europe next season. He has also been brave enough to stick to his beliefs at times, even as supporters showed anxiety – it takes guts to stick with Steven Gerrard in front of the defence despite a horrifying performance at home to Aston Villa, while Sterling is now capable on operating on either wing, at the tip of a diamond midfield (just behind the striker) and up front with Suarez.
Most importantly, there has been some semblance of a “winning mentality”. Liverpool may have ultimately not won the league, but they would not have even come close to doing so were it not for winning games they had not done in previous years. Liverpool only won 1 game against Top 6 opposition in 2012-13. But this time around, they did the double over Manchester United, won 5-0 at White Hart Lane in Liverpool’s finest away win in years, and passed most big tests at home against the likes of Everton, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City. Moreover, Liverpool earned their first ever Premier League win at Stoke City and their first win at Southampton in 10 years. Put aside the hatful of goals Liverpool gave away, these were not the kind of results Liverpool usually earned in the recent past. This season, indeed, was different.
What held Liverpool back?
Two transfer windows have taken place in the 2013-14 season. The first was not as successful as was originally hoped, while the second was a non-event. Simon Mignolet replacing Pepe Reina was a brave move that paid off at times, Kolo Toure’s experience proved pivotal during the perfect start Liverpool made to the season while Mamadou Sakho is a defender with potential. But Iago Aspas hardly inspires confidence (at least outside of friendly games), Luis Alberto is nowhere to be seen, while Tiago Ilori has gone out on loan. The January transfer window was a non-event, as there were no signings – just negotiated and created a dramatic deadline day. On one hand, it shows Rodgers’ ability to bring the best out of the players he already has, rather than be a slave to the transfer market. On the other, it is a worry for Liverpool supporters questioning Rodgers’ ability on the transfer market.
Almost all talk centered around Liverpool’s weakness concerned their defence. The statistics do not make pretty reading – 23 more goals conceded throughout the season than Chelsea, conceding more goals than Crystal Palace and even Manchester United (despite their forgettable season). Liverpool’s defence is not as bad as the 50 goals conceded during the season would suggest. However, while a strong offence can take Liverpool from 8th (with 47 goals) to 2nd within two seasons, the key to moving up from 2nd is a tighter defence. Losses in concentration from time to time were unnecessary, depriving Simon Mignolet the chance to add to his 10 clean sheets for the season.
Brendan Rodgers’ tenure at Anfield began with an emphasis on possession, but gradually shifted to quick transitions from defence to attack to take advantage of the pace possessed by the frontmen. This philosophy has served Liverpool extremely well, especially since the arrival of Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho; but the failure to effect transitions the other way round (i.e. from attack to defence) makes Liverpool vulnerable on the counter, and ultimately prevented Liverpool from taking the title race down to the last day.
Given that the primary focus of the season would be the Premier League, it was imperative that Liverpool made a deep run in either of the Cup competitions this past season. The Capital One Cup and FA Cup would have served as a fine opportunity for some young players to gain experience playing for Liverpool, but losses to Manchester United and Arsenal ensured that it was not the case. Now that European football is also on the agenda, the demands that the extra 6 games before Christmas would place on the squad ensures that Liverpool need the Cup competitions to give their young players some game time.
What about the future?
Opposition managers like Jose Mourinho were quick to portray involvement in the Champions League as a bit of a burden, but Liverpool will surely need a deeper squad now that they have an extra tournament to take part in. Anfield will experience the famous European nights once again, but as mentioned earlier, the League is the bread and butter. All that will be achieved in Europe will count for nothing if Liverpool fail to keep their place in the Top 4 next season. One only needs to look at Tottenham Hotspur’s one-off run to the quarter-finals in 2009-10 as a precedent.
Despite the relatively small size of the squad, Liverpool sent 9 players out on loan for this past season. Brendan Rodgers and the rest of the coaching staff have kept tabs on the progress of each one of them. Suso, Andre Wisdom, Fabio Borini and Conor Coady may well have placed themselves in the manager’s thoughts; successfully making use of these young men as able squad players could save Liverpool millions that could be better served to strengthen the first team now and in the future.
Most importantly, Liverpool need to take the harshest of lessons learnt from their end season collapse and ensure that it does not happen again. The manager, supported by the ownership, and the playing squad have shown progress beyond recognition based on the methods that have worked for them over the past two years. Keep doing the right things and do not let panic set in when the going gets tough, and Liverpool will be able to break barriers that previously existed.
