The appointment of Brendan Rodgers was met with skepticism from a lot of experts as Liverpool FC looked to move on from a disappointing spell under club Legend Kenny Dalglish. We take a look back at Rodgers’ first year in charge at the club and how he has done so far.
How it started
On June 1st, 2012, Brendan Rodgers was signed as the new Manager of Liverpool Football Club, in place of a certain Kenneth Mathieson Dalglish. While people will state that he had big shoes to fill because of Dalglish’s legacy, the fact of the matter was that Liverpool fans’ expectations were lower than ever; after all, Liverpool had finished at a miserable 8th place under Dalglish.
Now, if your club is owned by an Abramovich (the man allegedly owns 5 yachts, a Boeing 767, 3 helicopters and 2 bomb-proof Maybach 62 limousines) or a Sheikh Mansour (he’s the Deputy Prime Minister of the oil-choked UAE), you can afford to go for the latest trending manager and send him to the market with your credit card to buy a few star players and make you an overnight success. As Liverpool FC do not have that luxury, the approach had to be a little more grounds-up. You need someone who you can bank on to improve your club as a whole, not just the current squad. That is where Rodgers came in; if you look back, it’s obvious there could have been no other choice. When it comes to iteratively raising the level of a team, you simply need to look at the fantastic job Rodgers had done with Swansea City. From winning promotion to the Premier League in his first season, to guiding Swansea to a hugely impressive 11th place finish, Rodgers has shown his mettle as a manager. And it wasn’t just the results that made him stand out; he also displayed two more essential characteristics.
Firstly, he has always focused on a brand of fluid passing style of play with a clear focus an attacking football. Every team he has lined up has gone on the pitch with the intent to out-pass and out-score the opponent. So much so that the playing style of the Swansea City team of 2011-12 was regularly compared to the tiki-taka style of Barcelona FC.
Secondly, Rodgers is also regarded highly for his knack at coaching youngsters, and helping them develop into the mould he seeks for his attacking style of football. Some of the players that came into the spotlight under his watch include Scott Sinclair, Joe Allen, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Nathan Dyer, all of whom were in their early 20s at the time. Only Dyer still remains at Swansea, with the rest having been signed up by Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham, respectively.
Let’s have a quick recap of some of the major events of the season that would be running through Brendon Rodgers’ head as he plans for the next period.

Disastrous. There is no other way to really sum up what happened in the Summer Transfer window of 2012.Ai??Rodgers inherited a squad that was widely understood to be full of players who simply weren’t cut out to play the kind of football he wanted his teams to play. It was also clear that a lot of people would have to move on, and new faces put in their place. Unfortunately, Liverpool only managed to complete half of that task. Which meant that the list of players going out included Dirk Kuyt, Maxi RodrAi??guez, Charlie Adam, Craig Bellamy, FA?bio AurAi??lio and Alberto Aquilani, the first three having been regulars in the previous season’s first teams. Andy Carroll and Jay Spearing were also sent off on loan stints. In their place joined Joe Allen (for about A?15 million, the same amount recovered from the exits of the players listed above), Fabio Borini (who scored 10 goals for Roma in 24 outings), Oussama Aissaidi (a relatively untested winger from the dutch league) and Nuri Sahin (on loan from Real Madrid). Between them, there is no way that they could have been expected to exceed the 31 goals scored by players now on their way out, which had contributed to an anyway lowly tally of a meager 79 goals in all competitions scored last season.
Something went wrong. Rodgers MUST have wanted atleast two more signings, but him and Liverpool FC were just not able to close out those deals. The biggest example of this mess was Clint Dempsey; news linking him to Liverpool FC went from ‘nearly signed’, to ‘negotiations stuck over an amount on A?1 million’, to ‘lo-and-behold, Tottenham have swept up the lad from under the Reds’ noses!’
A Learning Curve
The system Rodgers preaches can take time for teams to embrace. Especially while playing in the pressure cooker that is the Premier League, teaching new styles to players who’ve played a very different style in the past (like Stevie Gerrard) or are new to the Premier League (like Fabio Borini) is a job easier said than done. At the same time, even Rodgers needed time to understand each player’s strengths and capabilities.
In his first ten games, he tried various combinations in attack, using various permutations and combinations with Suarez, Sterling, Downing, Borini and Suso. The learning curve, of course, took its toll. The first 10 matches saw only 2 wins, with 3 losses and 5 draws. Brendon’s Liverpool FC were still coming together. But the signs were there, with each match featuring attacks that gave a glimpse of what the team might be capable of. Between the embarrassing 3-0 loss to West Brom on the first match of the season, and the 1-3 loss at home to Swansea, there was a 2-5 drubbing on Norwich. This match was a great showcase of what Rodgers was trying to do at the club.
Conversely, the last 10 matches of the season featured 5 wins, 1 loss and 4 draws.
Talent Extractor
Despite the failings in the transfer window, Rodgers’ ability to get the best out of players, especially the young ones, has helped Liverpool manage with a squad lacking depth. While Kenny Daglish must also get the credit for giving some of the youngsters a shot last season, Rodgers has done immensely well in utilising the talents of Raheem Sterling and Suso, who have become almost overnight sensations. He has also orchestrated a resurgence from Henderson and Downing; with both, he spoke openly of being disappointed by these players. Seems he knew what he was doing, as both have subsequently fought and won their places in the first team squad time and again. In the 6-0 victory of Newcastle in April, Henderson gave an excellent performance, even knocking in 2 goals:
The Nuri Sahin Story
The tale on Nuri Sahin’s stint at Liverpool FC is one that received little media attention, but it is an odd enigma that is worth pondering over. Sahin was taken on loan from Real Madrid at the start of the season. Why take a central midfielder on loan when you already have Steven Gerrard, Lucas Leiva, Joe Allen, Jordon Henderson and Jonjo Shelvey fighting for the same spot? The answer is simple: by all appearances, it seemed like Sahin was exactly the sort of player that would succeed in Rodgers’ system. A young (he is still only 24 years old) player who can play anywhere in the center of midfield, who is equally at adept at long and short passes of the ball, and is also not afraid to tackle. He had the eye and the ball control Brendon Rodgers needed, and with him seeming surplus to Real Madrid’s needs, there was always the prospect that he could be tempted to come to Merseyside at the end of the season.
But it just didn’t work out. And probably one of the reasons why it’s not discussed a lot is because no one is really sure what went wrong, and why he was sent off to finish the season on loan at Borussia Dortmund. In the 7 Premier League games he was involved in, he contributed one goal and one assist. But more importantly, he wasn’t able to regularly stamp his authority in any of those games; there was never a performance which showed that he was the man for the job, a step above his peers.
Now it is just another case of what could have been. Oh well..
Late Christmas Presents: Coutinho and Sturridge
The January transfer window was the exact opposite of the Summer transfer window that had passed. The latter had involved a large number of players moving in & out with the resulting squad being weaker than when the window opened. The January window, on the other hand, only saw Joe Cole and the goalkeeper Doni being released (and Sahin’s move to Dortmund), while Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho joining the squad. Both have been proven to be a revelation since the day they joined. That they were brought in for a total outlay of approximately A?20 million is just the icing on the cake. Especially when you think about the A?35 million spent on Andy Carroll (*shudders*).
Sturridge instantly melded into the first team, and has formed a lethal partnership with Suarez. The movements, dribbling and finishing abilities of these two are a nightmare for any defence to deal with.
Coutinho was expected to be someone who would maybe play one or two matches here and there, but mostly be the ‘flair player for the future of the team’. He has, however, surpassed everyone’s expectations, including Rodgers’. His movement and passing, especially when deployed in a Central Attacking Midfielder role, have been exquisite, and with regular team play we can expect him to get better and better.
Not Beating Goliath
Unfortunately, for all the attacking verve and intricate play on display, Liverpool have not found success when facing off against superior opposition. Of the 12 matches played against the 6 teams that finished above Liverpool in the Premier League this season, they have registered only one win (a 3-2 home victory over Tottenham). This is hugely disappointing, and something that will be at the top of Rodgers’ mind at this time. One thing he intends to do is bring in a few key players, who should hopefully add that extra bit of quality needed. But also, he needs to instill an extra bit of confidence in the squad. A little faith can go a long way in seeing team through.
Parting Anecdote
It is interesting to note how managers often need to change their stance towards certain players and clubs as their careers progress; just look at the Rafa Benitez and Chelsea saga that unfolded this season.
When Swansea City got promoted to the Premier League in 2011, Liverpool Manager Kenny Dalglish was amongst the first to send his congratulations. In an interview looking back at that incident, this is what he had to say about Dalglish and Liverpool FC:
