FC Barcelona : End Of An Era And A Return To Common Sense

FC Barcelona

In the aftermath of FC Bayern Munich’s demolition of FC Barcelona, the questions on everyone’s mind are – Is this the end of an era? Has Barcelona’s time in the limelight, as the preeminent team on the continent, come to an end?

Being football fans on this date and time, we are privileged. Our privilege is that what we are witnessing is perhaps the death of tiki-taka football, but what will come is a necessary evolution at Barcelona. What will arise out of the ashes from such a devastating defeat is a new era in Barcelona’s game, a focus away from tiki-taka football, towards more efficient football. What this era will be marked by is the acquisition of specialist signings, a Barcelona that will be less possession reliant, and a better management of the raw talents at La Masia.

For the past three seasons, Barcelona have experimented with the acquisition of defensive midfielders to provide defensive cover for the squad. At times the pay-off has been grand, as Javier Mascherano was playing in central defense in the triumph at Wembley in 2011 and two years before him, it was Yaya Toure in Rome. Toure’s fine display in central defense and Mascherano’s year later, perhaps emboldened Pep Guardiola, manager at the time, to move forward with his vision of Total Football.

In the school of Total Football, no player has a fixed position. Every player can theoretically switch position with another, even if they play on opposite ends of the field. While Pep’s experiment was not as drastic, he had seen it work before in The Dream Team. Ronald Koeman, who actually started his career as a midfielder, played in central defense in Barcelona’s first ever Champions League triumph. So when Guardiola found success for a second time, whereas his mentor Cruyff had failed, it only further reinforced a false sense of security in Guardiola and subsequently in his successor, Tito Vilanova.

The flaw Tito Vilanova overlooked when he took over Barcelona was that defensive midfielders are not a long term solution to fix a leaking defense. In Guardiola’s last season, the experiment finally came to a crash as it did for his mentor Cruyff in 1994 against AC Milan. Not only did Guardiola lose the Champions League semi-final to Chelsea’s cutting edge attack, but Real Madrid also gave Mascherano a failing grade in defense, as they snatched La Liga away from Guardiola. At that point,Ai?? Pep Guardiola realized his experiment was responsible for the disastrous campaign. The experiment was over, the hypothesis that defensive midfielders could cover as central defenders had not held up to scrutiny of the highest kind. These experiments should have ended here, but they didn’t.

One can only fathom the reason as to why Tito would continue with a failed experiment. Why you ask? Simple, he was the new manager and he had a point to prove. While everyone had already seen that Barcelona needed to buy defenders at the end of last season, Tito opted to disprove Guardiola. He chose vanity over common sense. Conducting the same experiment, with a player, who offered different variables, in the hope of a passing grade. Song by his physique is more in the mold of a modern defender than Mascherano. He is tall, physically strong, and perhaps a tad faster than Mascherano. The gamble was that he’d have the same positional sense as the Argentine and, that along with his other attributes, would make him the perfect fit to solidify the defense. Tito couldn’t be more wrong and Barcelona were left even more exposed by Song’s acquisition.

What both Guardiola and Tito overlooked is that total football as a philosophy is a myth. According to the philosophy, players can cover for each other. The real life results is that they cannot. Why? Because though Barcelona may try to play Total Football, no one else really does. The other squads on the continent live by the traditional rules of football and those rules dictate producing specialist players that are excellent at playing in their precise positions on the field. It’s simple to see how stupid their thinking is right from the start. Total Football is a flawed philosophy because you are sourcing players from teams, who don’t produce hybrid players but specialists. But also, why couldn’t they realize the flaw with this notion; would you use Messi as a defensive midfielder or center back just because total football says in theory he can play there? No, it’s preposterous, anyway you look at it.

Victim of Total Football?

So now that at last Total Football, as a philosophy & theory has failed under real world scrutiny, Barcelona must return to buying specialist players. Natural defenders to provide robust cover would be a good start. For the foreseeable future, Barcelona’sAi?? acquisition of players, who can play Total Football is dead. They should refocus on specialist players not only to strengthen their defense but also every position that needs to be reinforced. This also means acquiring strikers, instead of playing wingers like Alexis or a midfielder like Cesc Fabregas in those roles.

Barcelona will rebound as a squad and this starts by the management realizing that the Total Football philosophy is an idealistic one instead of a practical one. Not only in terms of player roles is Total Football idealistic and impractical, but also in just playing Total Football, you realize it’s idealism. It’s beautiful, perfect almost! Barcelona look like well versed footballers performing the same way every time. Flawless performance, unless you have a partner, who doesn’t follow the script like FC Bayern Munich, over two rounds. Ai?? Ai??They will likely win the league soon and you should applaud them, because it’s probably the last time your going to see them play that way. Total Football purists will argue against the following statements but in recent years it’s been proven time and again.

Possession of the ball is not a viable form of defense nor is it a guaranteed way to generate superior offense. Total Football will have you believe it does both. You defend yourself by keeping the ball and you generate offense by monopolizing possession. Reducing the adversary’s chances on the ball and their ability to generate dangerous play. Total Football is suppose to stack all the important factors in your favor simply by keeping possession. Watching Barcelona hold on to the ball, longer than Bayern Munich, over two games didn’t see them get one meaningful shot on target. Nor did holding the ball prevent them from getting thrashed 7-0 on aggregate. For all it’s aesthetics, it’s not a guarantee to victory nor is it very efficient. It’s hard to play, it’s intricate, and it’s very over-reliant on skills instead of physical power.

Ai??Bayern may not have had the ball for longer periods, nor did they complete more passes, but when they attacked it was incisive. When

Great footballers. Gifted athletes

they reached Barcelona’s back line, they almost always threatened.Ai?? Also, Bayern Munich’s superior physical attributes simply overpowered Barcelona on more than one occasion and that directly lead to goals. In Bayern, we find a squad that debunks a myth which is typically encountered among the Blaugrana faithful. A myth created under the legendary Total Football pragmatist Pep Guardiola. The myth is that being a physically strong and tall player, makes you unsuitable to play in the Barcelona system. The myth is that players, who are physically strong, rely on their strength instead of skill and that they have a poor work ethic. They are simply unsuitable and incompatible to play in Barcelona.

If you look at the work rate of Mandzukic, Gomez, Martinez, Muller, just to name a few, over those two games, this belief doesn’t hold. Not only does Bayern possess a perfect combination of physicality and skill, but their work rate is phenomenal. Their defense is no experimentation like Barcelona’s, it’s a machine whose purpose is to stop opponents dead in their tracks. Their attack is also incisive. In essence it’s more reflective of how Total Football will be played from this moment on, than what Barcelona plays at this moment.

If Barcelona have dictated what Total Football was for the past five years, from this moment on, Bayern and Dortmund, the other semi-finalist, have redefined it. Barcelona is playing a game of catch-up now. Bayern and Dortmund’s redefinition of Total Football isn’t about possession, it’s about being physical and having skill. It’s less about controlling a game with ridiculous possession and more about making the most of the possession you manage to get. It’s about being efficient. But, the most important factor is, it’s about being unpredictable and having enough squad depth, so that you can insert a good amount of variety to switch your system around as needed.

Evolution in football

Barcelona can’t be the embodiment of Total Football at this moment. They have skill but little or no physical power. They have possession, but is very inefficient. Overall, it’s rigid and predictable, because the the squad has neither an alternative tactical setup nor Ai??enough squad depth at it’s disposal, which can provide that X-factor. Under Guardiola, Barcelona had a tactical wild card although they where lacking in squad depth. Under Tito Vilanova they’ve lost even the tactical reshuffle, which combined with poor depth, forces Barcelona to play rigid, inefficient, and predictable football. Barcelona will probably evolve to resemble sides in the mold of Dortmund and Munich in the coming seasons. Literally, everything is stacked against them if they persist on trying to play their idealistic fashion. The Barcelona’s vision of the game needs to be rethought. They need players with physical presence; they needs depth, but overall they needs a tactical wild card, something to hit opponents like a sleeping man awoken with a bucket of water. Possession is not key to the evolution of Total Football. It is evolving to the point that a Darwinian definition is beginning to define it, and Barcelona must adapt. It is not the strongest of teams that win (Chelsea), nor the richest (Madrid or City or PSG), nor the most well managed (Manchester United), but the one most responsive to change. As it stands, Barcelona are not responding to change in the way the game is being played. The squad and whole institution has been foolish in thinking their style of play could work indefinitely. Football is a cycle and eventually teams will find out what are the weaknesses and how best to exploit them, as Bayern clearly did.

This brings us to my final point. Squad depth is crucial if Barcelona are to overcome this slump in form and reclaim their title as one of the best teams around (if not the best). It’s unlikely, due to constraint in coffer, that transfers will offer all the solutions to squad depth (or the lack of it). Yet Barcelona are privileged like very few clubs are, with La Masia. The problem is, players that come of age are mismanaged. With young players, there are two approaches to – nature or nurture. Nature means the player is a natural, he can jump into the first team and be a starter or important reserve, seamlessly. The problem is, Messi is one of the few who has done it and not every player at La Masia is like the diminutive Argentine. Nurture is something, Barcelona isn’t doing very well either. Thiago has barely gotten any games since the arrival of Cesc Fabregas. Tello, who has produced a decent contribution of goals, is also not played often. Considering Cesc and Alexis, as well as Pedro, who aren’t having the best of seasons, it is a testament to how Barcelona are failing, at this moment to nurture future stars.

One can’t run a squad with the same eleven all season; it’ll run them into the ground. In addition to giving Masia players much needed

Mismanaged by Vilanova?

game time, it gives starters something to think about. You need to let them know that they are not irreplaceable and if need be, there are means to replace them. Perhaps the most neglected players on Barcelona’s roster, that are from La Masia, are Marc Bartra and Martin Montoya.Ai?? They both look like the genuine articles. Defenders with potential to succeed in Barcelona’s first team. But again, Dani Alves has the reputation and commands a start every game over Montoya. Alves is 29, it’s time to start nurturing Montoya to take over, because Alves doesn’t have much time left. Barta has just been completely mismanaged by Vilanova. Nurture means playing against opponents in La Liga, not being thrown to the lions, in a Champions League match (read, the semi-final against Bayern). Perhaps this experience will forge the young defender into a harder man.Ai?? After all, Puyol started playing, when he was 18 but, it’s still not the correct thing to do to him. Bartra’s case is the prime example of why Masia talents need to be getting that game time ahead of some starters when they can. It just shows how poor Tito is at managing La Masia. The academy’s brightests can’t be left in a state of total neglect and be expected to instantly fill important roles when called upon. It doesn’t work that way. Currently there are names floating around, that have a lot of dreams, hope, and excitement attached to them. Dongou, Deulofeu, Rafinha, Sergi Roberto, Muniesa , et al. But these will all be unrealized dreams if the academy’s best aren’t being cultured early. If Tito can’t nurture them and they aren’t naturals, then they must be loaned out. When one looks at some of the players on both the Bayern and Dortmund’s squad and see their ages, they start to see what made, proven young stars look like and see the divide in quality between them, and La Masia prospects. To name examples, Deulofeu is a year younger than Mario Gotze, Bartra is a year younger than Thomas Muller, Montoya is two years David Alaba’s senior. Muller has been to a World Cup and along with Gotze and Alaba, is a Champions League finalist. Bayern and Dortmund’s nurturing of young talent is putting Barcelona’s much famed academy to shame. The divide is already huge. Barcelona waits any longer and it’s next generation might not turn into the stars, which they think they have in the B squad. Final food for thought, Muller and Gotze are going to the World Cup next summer. What will Deulofeu, Bartra, and Montoya be doing?

A lot of change is necessary. It’s not impossible. But it’ll take a significantly more radical approach in terms of just trying to change the whole philosophy that governs this club. To regain it’s status as the preeminent club, Barcelona need to stop believing in the principles of Total Football and become a practical club. Sign players to play in the positions they need – specialists, not imitations. It needs reinvention, tactically, because it’s too rigid and predictable with one single formation. Possession is only part of the game it isn’t a key to victory, this needs to lose some emphasis. Not having the ball is not always a bad thing. The squad needs depth, and physically gifted players. Tito needs to stop making the mistake that skill is the only value in football (a sport with ai???athletesai???) and that you can win with the same 11 players all season. Lastly, La Masia is important to develop squad depth and gifted players. The current management is failing the club and the youngsters. For a club, that is so proud of it’s academy, it sure doesn’t believe or trust them. Barcelona has produced stars, but the current crop of prospects need playing time to also develop into anything close to being stars. To all those who only see a loss, but not the end of an era, these are serious problems that need addressing. Barcelona could very well decline back into mediocrity if serious attention isn’t paid to this squad.
