With the season over with and the first signing for next term already revealed, it’s time to look at the past campaign through the magnifying glass. Before looking at the regular season, one has to analyze FC Barcelonaai??i??s dealings in the transfer market during the pre-season. Of course the purchase of Jordi Alba turned out to be an inspired acquisition. Ever since Eric Abidal’s unfortunate health problems, the left back position has been a weak point in an already flimsy defense and Alba is has been a great addition to the fold.
Prior and during the pre-season many pundits saw this season as the perfect chance for Marc Muniesa to break into the first team along with Marc Bartra. However, this never happened because of Muniesa’s lengthy 7 month injury, and as to Bartra’s limited appearances throughout the season, only Tito can answer that. This particular development forced FC Barcelona to scour the transfer market for defensive options – leading up to the decision to purchase Alex Song as a 2 in 1 solution for persistent problems in central defense. In retrospect it was obviously the wrong acquisition. Anyone at the time could have predicted this last summer as well, regardless of how adamant Tito Vilanova tried to justify this transfer.
With an ever greater lack of genuine center-backs, Carles Puyol already showing signs of injury problems last season, the decision to buy a pure defender was only logical. Alas, Barcelonaai??i??s transfer policy has never made much sense since Sandro Rosell assumed the Presidency during Pep Guardiolaai??i??s term, and it seems to have bled into Titoai??i??s term now.
Last summer FC Barcelona had the choice to purchase either Song for ai??i??19 million or trigger the buy-back clause for Alberto BotAi??a for a meager ai??i??5 million in comparison. If Barcelona wanted to experiment with a 2 in 1 solution such as Song, a player we Barcelona didn’t need because la Blaugrana already had 3, maybe 4 players who can play CDM in the first team alone, then why not give a chance to BotAi??a? A young, pure CB with vision, pace, power and most of all ai??i?? heai??i??s fairly consistent. In lieu of the state of the defense at the time, the obvious option seemed to be BotAi??a. Had he not worked out like Song hasn’t this season, the club could have easily played the trusty MasAi??a card by expressing they wished to give a chance to one of our graduates. But now, the squad is stuck with an overvalued (and overestimated) player on their hands who rarely plays and even worse, is, frankly, unsalable ai??i?? at least at his original price-tag.
At the start of the season we saw hints of changes into how Tito’s Barcelona were going to be like. Wingers played a wider game while central midfielders went deeper into the area. This created both new strengths and weaknesses. While it created a way for CMs to have more chances in attack. It also made it harder for players to maintain the contained pressure up the pitch Barcelona were so well known for during Pep’s term. Of course, this could have been dealt with if the team had added a quality CB (BotAi??a anyone?). Or made more use of the one they already had, Marc Bartra, while also trying to condition the still susceptible aspects of Dani Alves’ defensive game.
With wingers playing a wider game, two things surfaced, one being the low number of goals from wingers like Pedro and Alexis, and the recent state of affairs in Barcelona coined the Messi-dependencia by the press. It should come to no surprise that both Pedro and Alexis have started to score goals at a constant rate only after Messi’s injury. During the first half of the season one saw a midfield combination in La Liga comprised of Thiago and Fabregas. This helped with resting Iniesta and Xavi for big games and spread the fatigue around, so no one player was ever really playing in an exhausted state.
Regardless of Messi playing pretty much every game in the first half of the season, and Villa coming back from a long injury, the truth is that Xavi, Iniesta, and Busquettes are undoubted starters. While Iniesta can be effective on the wing, he makes less impact compared to when operates in central midfield. But with Xavi getting older, Fabregas and Thiago should have been afforded a lot more playing time – that is if Tito grows a backbone and starts to phase Xavi out. Ironically, both of them play best when they’re not together with Xavi because they all play similar roles. While when together, manage to complement each other similar to how Iniesta and Xavi do.
Granted, their fitness levels didn’t last and probably only worsened after Vilanova was forced to step down temporarily as coach for health reasons in late December. Especially when the real test are the fixture-heavy months of January and February, when the knockout stages for both the Copa del Rey and Champions League are played in succession along with La Liga. With a total of 14 games in two months and only two weeks with no midweek matches, becomes imperative.
And yet, at this point in the season it was the time when key players like Xavi and Puyol didnai??i??t get any rest, if any at all. Puyol is an interesting case considering that twice he was substituted due to injury, and yet every time he was given medical clearance he would be in the starting eleven right away rather than giving Bartra playing chances. Puyol not getting the much needed time to come back to full fitness led to losing him and Mascherano for the rest of the season, and having to play Bartra by necessity over choice.
The mistake made with Puyol is one that was repeated once more with none other than Lionel Messi. In early April, Messi was injured during the first leg of the quarterfinal match against Paris Saint German and while it wasn’t as bad as feared, it still seemed like giving the player rest would be the best decision, yet, a week later he played in the return leg. Granted, Messi started as a sub but after this match La Pulga was sidelined for two weeks.
But the highlight of this season for Barcelona was the first leg of the Champions League semifinal against Bayern Munich. Prior to this match Messi was in doubt to be in the lineup at all but was cleared to play hours before, once more prompting Vilanova to include the Argentinean in the starting XI. It demonstrated two things – Vilanova’s didnai??i??t have a contingency plan for the first leg of the Champions League semifinals that didnai??i??t center on Messi, and how reluctant he was to use the full depth of his squad. After the match, and considering Messi’s performance, the fact that he shouldn’t have been a starter was clear to all.
During the first leg of the semifinal Vilanova waited a full 80 minutes to make any substitutions and when he did it wasn’t for Messi, who wasn’t up to par after just getting back from injury, but he decided to replace Pedro who was doing a great job at working up and down the field, even though he wasn’t able to work towards goal. Again, Vilanova’s Barcelona was shown to be weak against big teams due to his tactical decisions.
Bayern Munich, and all German teams for that matter, play a very physical and tactical game. Meaning that when needed they are willing to play a defensive match or an attacking match but on both sides of the spectrum, an extremely physical game as well. During the CL semifinal, Bayern found the perfect sweet spot between the two and managed to stop Barcelonaai??i??s passing game and make full use of the extra space Vilanova’s BarAi??a left open when compared to Pep’s. The second leg was very similar to the first only that Vilanova made the decision to leave Messi in the bench, again, something that should have happened in the first leg. Even though he did make use of subs in this match they had little effect as Barcelona lost on an aggregate score of 7-0 after two matches. Out of the Champions League and Copa del Rey, only the League was left to be won and that already seemed to be in the bag after having achieved the best first half in history.
The final stretch of the season was done without Messi, again due to injury, demonstrating once more how bad Vilanovaai??i??s squad handling skills are, and with a 100 point record to fill the void left by Barcelonaai??i??s exit from the CL and Copa del Rey.
This Barcelona season could be summed up in a before and after Vilanova’s cancer treatment hiatus. Prior to him leaving he was doing a great job at spreading the playing time around but during and after coming back, squad rotations were either really poorly handled or nonexistent at all. Considering this was Vilanova’s first season at the helm of a top flight team, it could be considered a B at most. Now with more experience under his belt, let’s hope for him to improve his squad rotations next season, and with the first acquisition in preparation for that has been revealed as Neymar da Silva. Time to look into what Barcelona needed this season and need for the next.
One thing that can be argued with is the depth of the squad at Barcelona. This never really proved to be a problem during Pepai??i??s term because he made full use of the reserve team players when needed. But with Tito, that seems to not be the case anymore as he feels reluctant to use players like Bartra and any of the players in the reserve. With Barcelona having bought Neymar, while one canai??i??t argue that heai??i??s great player, it makes one to think whether player was even a requirement for the team.
Looking at the full team sheet of players available in the front third of the pitch for Barcelona, the first thought would be a definite no. Leaving Messi out of the drawing Alexis, Pedro, Cristian Tello and Villa are all players that can play in any position in attack as needed, and with Deloufeu and Rafinha coming up from the reserve due to clauses on their contracts next season, the need for Neymar really comes into question now, even more so at the hefty price of ai??i??57 million.
Ever since Rosell assumed office, the transfer policy has made a shift from buying what was needed to buying what the President wants. Effectively also making it more into a short term strategy rather than a long term one. During Laportaai??i??s term, reserve players were only sold when they had absolutely no need for them, neither at the time nor in the long term and even then, a buy-back clause was always included just in case.
The perfect contrast would be how in 2010, newly elected President Rosell sold Oriol Romeu to Chelsea because after the purchase of Mascherano he had little to no expectations of playing time for the youngster. Both, Mascherano and Romeu, are players of similar playing styles and while Mascherano indeed had more experience, Romeu was still a great prospect to the future. Another great example would be selling Bojan to Roma and purchasing Alexis for an insane ai??i??40 million (according to reports itai??i??s ai??i??26 million in cash plus various incentives). When comparing the two after their first season, the difference in goals is minimal and only gets worse when comparing goal to match ratio. For the amount of money paid for Alexis, one would have expected a lot more goals from him. Still, with Bojan coming back this summer this once again brings back doubt of whether Neymar was even needed for next season due to the plethora of attacking options available to the team and even more so when the biggest weak link in the Barcelona squad is depth in the defense.
What Barcelona need in attack is a player who can effectively play for Messi when he needs rest and one player who would fit in nicely is Bojan. He’s a player who can honestly fit right into that false 9 role and at the same time give an effective alternative because of his effective long shots. Most people seem to have forgotten by now, but Bojan’s natural position is that of a centre forward. Bojan was moved to the wing because that position was taken care of at the time in Barcelona, and while at Milan he has even played as an attacking midfielder because of the lack of one in the team so he’s proven he can play anywhere when needed and effectively at that. He already knows the system and has proven he can score goals when needed with BarAi??a before. But with Neymar coming in, his role at Barcelona seems to have come to a definite end and one can only hope that he’s next destination is one that takes full advantage of his talents as striker rather than a winger.
This seasonai??i??s transfers and Vilanovaai??i??s recent comments of only being an employee and not having a real say in the formation of the team leads one to come to a single conclusion, FC Barcelona moves for Sandro Rosellai??i??s ego. Still, thereai??i??s hope in the horizon as Joan Laporta has stated that heai??i??s ready for another term, but with next election being in 2016, one can only hope that the damage isnai??i??t too deep by then.
